I know investors and they do have values, but at the end of the day, they are very difficult people to convince to back anything. They need to believe there is a chance of getting something back like taking the company public, or selling to a bigger company in the future. Both of these outcomes though, might possibly damage voat. So you really need to figure out another strategy to make it worth the investors time and money. So that probably means some kind of royalty deal where the investor gets paid a percentage of ad revenue.

Also have your hire work to get advertisers. If a YouTube channel with 10,000 subscribers can get ads, then surely a website with more users can get ads, deals, sponserships. Over $1000 in 24 hours sounds pretty good to me. Considering a web host such as Amazon charges about $0.03 per GB and given 117GB of bandwidth use per day wouldn't that mean a cost of about $3.50?

I'd like to get an idea of what you are trying to achieve. If you are hoping to one day work on Voat full time with a few other people and not need secondary jobs what would that look like for you?

Guessing at $15 per day in operating costs, and donation income average of $1000 per day would suggest you could have over $350,000 of income, so I feel like I'm missing something here. Breaking down the cost of the servers and bandwidth along with proposed pay for full time work and number of people that would work full time would help us get a better picture of where we are and were you would like to be.

Have you guys ever considered mirroring the site on IPFS and promoting that fact? I know that posting would have to be only on the live version of the site, but some sort of distributed mirroring would offload a good bit of the read requests. We have all witnessed in one way or another how a website which takes on investors can slowly degrade and become outright unusable. Given our commitment to Freedom of Speech, we have to be very careful about who we partner with. For the record, we have had investment offers from all over the world during the past 2 years, many of which we were either too busy to entertain or too concerned with underlying motives of the parties involved.

I wish I had an answer for you, brother. As you are obviously fully aware, the system works to stranglehold those unprepared to sacrifice their core principles to the highest bidder.

My personal opinion is that the type of investor you are currently going to attract is not going to entertain your philosophy of freedom of speech because your core audience at the moment are alt-right wingnuts. You need to get the hippies in here. They are a target audience to companies and institutions which have more similar guiding principles to your own.

This is a text-based platform. Bandwidth wise, it's the cheapest possible solution per user - by far. Traditional websites, forums or imageboards are wasting infinitely more per eyeball (loading images and other media) and still managing to survive and make profit. They are happy when numbers spike because they found a way to actually make profit from eyeballs. Only Voat seems to get Shoah'd every time a growth opportunity presents itself. It's completely nonsensical. If you are making a loss with the current population - which is what you're saying - more users would only make it worse. Voat users, for some inexplicable reason, carry a negative value.

The investor conundrum also doesn't make sense. Surely, some of them could be persuaded to invest for a percentage of profits without getting any additional policy rights.

I'm only just starting my company, but plan to buy ads here later. If you add an option to buy specific dates, artwork to be delivered for approval 1 month prior to running (or similar, so one wont need to have the campaign ready when ordering), I could buy some now.

Allow investors to buy bonds or similar instruments. Investor capital doesn't lead to stock ownership, but VOAT could pay a return on the bond when there were profits and management did not choose to reinvest in the business.

Or, issue only non-voting shares. Investors like VC funds would never do this but your users might. With non-voting shares, users could not influence the management team but would own part of the company for any profit sharing or if the company was sold.

He wouldn't be legally on the hook to follow the recommendations of the faux board but could anyways. Make the explicit statement that they are not buying shares and are under no obligation to make company decisions based on the donation, but then follow the voting anyways. I wish I was in a position to help. Unfortunately, I'm not. I had thought of opening a couple of the subs I look after to sidebar ads some months ago (see: sidebar of /v/asdf for examples for image ads and sponsored links). The idea was the pitch to private comic book and cosplay-related interests.

I went so far as to retain some help from a friend, go through a couple of mock-ups. I even opened the idea up to initial comment on one of my subs, but only one person took time to give any feedback (though it was still much appreciated feedback).

The money would go through my friend who would be putting his RL info on the line because I'm an anonymous coward. He would take a cut, and then I would take a cut (along with any future moderators). I wanted a portion to go to Voat, no matter what. The only thing I hadn't settled on was whether he would send along Voat's portion on my behalf, or if I would do it myself. Either way, I was leaning toward using my portion of the money to buy proper Voat ads to advertise my subs.

I never moved forward with the idea because I was worried about how it would be perceived.

I'd say a monthly sub fee would be best. I'd easily pay to visit this site. It would also have the side effect of weeding out the "un-dedicated" folks, who just come here for a "reddit-like" fix

Patreon has some history of not allowing users who support "inappropriate content". Voat has enough content that would probably immediate disqualify it from Patreon.

If you don't want to give away personal info online, Localbitcoins.com is one option I know of. It wasn't available in my area, but I was able to find a similar site. You could also try selling something on Openbazaar. For example, I bought a steam giftcard with cash at a store, then sold it for a slightly cheaper amount of bitcoin. Look up how to find a trusty escrow for OB, if you do this.

Sounds like you're interested in buying them with PayPal. I've bought and sold BTC with PayPal. It is more risky for the seller of the BTC than the buyer when someone is buying with PayPal. This is because a BTC transaction cannot be reversed and PayPal transactions can be.

Ads on this site were never going to be a consistent source of revenue. People don't like seeing ads, and people who run ads are only going to do so when they see some visible returns from such. Like you mentioned charity is a short term thing. People might click on and buy some ads to support the site at first, but that novelty and the funding it provided will dissipate without returns in the future.

Instead of ads, add a simple message box that can be 'gamed' for money. For instance buying a fresh message in the textbox that lasts for a minimum of 'x' minutes/hours costs $y. The price to replace that message goes constantly down eventually making it $0 after some fair period of time, perhaps 24 hours. Now everybody is looking at the messages, not only because they'd probably be entertaining, but also to see if they can grab the free message spot. Somebody who wants to get in on top of everybody else can pay a nominal fee to do just that.

Or integrate some sort of post/thread bumps and visibility for currency, similar to Reddit Gold. They tried a bunch of random ideas to monetize the idea and that's one of the few that actually worked. Learn from their many failures and copy their few successes where it's not detrimental to the ideals of Voat. Reddit Gold actually helped on Reddit to bring some gems to life once they were buried or brigaded.

Basically make funding Voat FUN. Merchandise will likely have the same issues as the donations. The profit margins are tiny and you'll get a huge burst of initial support followed by a rapid decline down to a trickle where the opportunity cost involved in shipping everything out getting close to make the whole thing actually end up costing, rather than making, money!

• Open up your code base so people can volunteer to fix it. If it's already open, advertise that fact and ask for help. Security by obscurity is not secure at all. If you can't afford a staff, I'm sure there are volunteers willing to help. I would myself, if it is within my abilities.

Don't take on an investor. Remain independent. It's the only way you can avoid pressure to influence content and users on the site. It's the only way you can remain in control (if the conspiracy theorists are incorrect and voat it not compromised).
