Only one way around the unreasonable payment processors. There are only 4 legal companies to use a credit card with in the U.S. All the smaller companies use one of the other 4, so paypal isn't separate, but also isn't independent of Visa.

Are you me? Those are exactly the rules I would use. Suggested as much here years ago. Didn't go over well then, but I think sentiment has changed on that. You practically never see porn on the front of all anymore, because nearly everyone downvotes it when they see it. So I think you would be just fine with those ground rules.
I'm very tempted to start a replacement as well but, realistically, I know I don't have the time for such an endeavor right now. Especially on such short notice. If you open source it, I would definitely pitch in though. I'm sure there are many here who could and would contribute. Best of luck, either way.

I have good tech skills, but no time. Site maintenance is a time and money vortex, and if everyone is working for free, cooperation between individuals is less likely.
The other problem is this particular software platform takes up a lot of hard drive space compared to a chan platform due to the post backlog, so will be more expensive to maintain. Reddit can do it because they are owned by (((big media))), but I doubt that Reddit itself makes any sort of a real profit.

Mastodon allows one to host one's own instance, but it's more like twitter. It's not completely decentralized and the development team is very left.
Development team for Element (formerly Riot) is left, I think. It's more of a replacement for WhatsApp and chatrooms. Still requires hosts, but the XMPP protocol it runs on is completely open.
ZeroNet appears to be entirely distributed. Not a huge userbase at the moment. ZeroMe is something like twitter. ZeroVoat is something like Voat, but seems to be dead.

The problem is that sites like Voat can't find payment processors. Paypal stole a large sum of money from the site. Coinbase and other coin services hosted in the US will eventually drop accounts as well because they basically function as a bank.
You basically have to become your own processor. SubscribeStar is the only service that made it through this bullshit. And part of that is because they're Russian so it was "easier" for them to set up outside of the US. They do not appear to have an API set up so your subscription with them is automatically reported to account.

I have a lemmy instance up at redchanit.us (can't link directly; new account) which you guys are welcome to use. For some background, I was tinkering with Lemmy a few months ago as a potential bunker for KotakuInAction, the GamerGate board on Reddit. They ended up going to .win before my proof of concept was operational, but I still had everything lying around. I work with AcidMan, who created 08chan, a zeronet alternative to 8chan when it went down, and we currently operate an 8chan successor imageboard.
The current instance is running on a very tiny VPS, but if there's interest and people want to actually use the site then I can upgrade it easily. I'll give it a bit and see if there is interest. If not, I'll mothball it again.

The problem is the website protection needs. VOAT is consistently under threat from hacks and DDOS attacks. You can build a protection against these systems, but that is where more of the expense than running the website will come from. Good DDOS protection will run you at least 6K or more per month. Really good protection is sometimes way more, 12K or more a month. There's a very active campaign of ending true free speech out there, after all. No one likes it when people group up together and start exchanging information freely, and then figuring out who their real enemies are.

I like that idea, but there's no way in hell that would happen. The Donald is already comped. They were smart enough to infiltrate that website a long time ago. While the majority of people there want free discussion, even that website has subjects and language that are completely forbidden and moderators that are ban happy. It's not worth building up a website that isn't going to give back as much as we need. Forget about the Donald and focus on creating a mirror, like the guy above said. It's better that way.

There's a paid archiving service I found some months ago. The guy who runs it is small-time and funny enough the website does note that over using it will result in you being asked to leave. I'm sure you could explain that you'd like to a big archive in a small amount of time... maybe work out additional payments.
