I own both as well, but I'd reach for my .357 before I reach for my .44. The ammo is more customizable for the .357, but you're absolutely right that defensive technology is changing everything. Have you seen those kickass rounds that shoot that high impact netting that slices through targets like they were made of paper? Those rounds come in a .357 variant. I plan to have a bunch of them one day when I can afford it.
If you look at UL ratings about lvl 4 is something like 44mag or 12ga with a 1oz slug, same energy. A 44mag works well on bears from what I'm told, but I never had to shoot a bear. Even with a vest and armor plate, I wouldn't let you shoot me with either one. The Winchester model 94, side eject, 44mag is my pick. Mounting any kind of scope would be fuggly, you'ld likely need to experiment, but a day light laser under the barrel may work. If you zero at 50yd, you'll hit 5" low at 100yd.

Neither. I like the original .45 Colt (not the .45 ACP). I'm a believer in big, relatively slow bullets for stopping power, as opposed to enough power to go through your target and several cars and buildings in back of it. The .357 and .44 magnums are difficult to control. The .45 Colt is easier to control and will most definitely kill anything the other two calibers will. And if your testosterone level still demands magnum power, .45 Colt brass (or at least the Starline stuff) is every bit as stout as the two magnums, and the cases (being originally designed for black powder) are big enough to easily accommodate magnum powder loads.
I've tested a few .45 Colts vs. .45 ACP, thanks to a buddy of mine who came back from Afghanistan. I have to say, I like the .45 ACP more, but mainly because I used and owned a couple of 1911A1s before I tried the .45 Colts. Between the two, if I had the option of not worrying about ammo supply, I would take the .45 Colt, but I have plenty of friends and ammo vendors with better prices on .45 ACP. I was able to find a Sig Sauer Scorpion 1911 on sale, and bought one with my military buddy. You should have seen the smile on his face.
Nothing wrong with the .45 ACP at all, I just like the .45 Colt. Plus I prefer revolvers over automatics. As far as ammo supply is concerned, well, I handload all my cartridges. Sure beats the price of factory ammunition.
I was going to buy a .357 after having fired a 44 magnum and basically decided my once broken wrist didn't like it. I mentioned my idea to my Dad and he decided that I should try his .45 colt. After a trip to the range, I ended up buying my Dad's .45 Colt Anaconda. I enjoy shooing it more than any weapon I own. Though he made me swear if I ever needed to sell it to sell it back to him.
He sold me a piece of American History (Colt no longer makes revolvers and the Anaconda was the LAST model they came out with.) at the price he paid for it originally too. I could have turned around and doubled my money more than once now. He's a truly remarkable man.
Could go Counter Strike style and get yourself a pair of Beretta's for some akimbo kicks for around $500 new a piece for the mid tier model. I don't think of 6 guns when I think akimbo style.

.357, honestly .308 for rifles is generally the historic Military round. I like Bill Burrs take that anything above a .22 is going to make you deaf and blind if used indoors and outdoors might be a little rough on your senses. Guns are LOUD so always wear ear protection. I think it is the concussive force from the barrel than the audibility.
And despite what people think a high velocity 22 lr is going to do bodies in close quarters. Subsonic rounds less so but you can get higher velocity loads for not much more
Yeah seriously. Fucking media always has people fighting zombies in movies using big caliber guns and ammunition. Not the case, I'd be using a .22 Henry lever action rifle, and just picking my targets carefully. When you have an accurate gun, and a more accurate trained shooter, the gun matters little, and the accuracy is key.
Another thing about movies and games is that you're always supposed to have full auto guns and firing bursts. No, no, no. Stick to semi automatic, go from one target to another, and take a breath and aim in between each one. Firing all over the place only works if you know that the targets are grouped together so close you won't miss. Other than that, burst or full auto firing destroys accuracy, and that doesn't help in a situation where you need to think fast.
.357 magnum, hands down. It's my everyday carry for one, and for two I have a Henry Big Boy chambered in the same caliber and it's a really fun gun to shoot.
I own both calibers but from a practical point of view I'd go with .357. The rounds are less expensive (shoot more), smaller (carry more) and you can shoot .38 spl. (which is very common). The .357 still has enough power that you can take medium game with it and much more defensive tech has been developed for it than the .44 as it's more popular. The .44 just has more power going for it. So I'd say regardless of if you're talking about survival situations, self defense or for fun the .357 has the most advantages.
My go to carry is .357. But if i could only own one, it would be the .44, as i sometimes hunt and predator call in grizz country. When i do i carry my .460, since i dont have to choose between just .357 or .44.
My first handgun was a colt python in .357 mag and I'm stupid for selling it. A friend put six on a silhouette at 100 yrds with a .44 mag. I would have both.
What would you use it for? self defense at home? every day carry? fun at the range? other? also, which one are you the most confortable shooting, most likely to hit your intended target (ok, it depends on the firearm, but a big fast bullet that misses is not nearly as effective as a smaller / slower one that hits...); do you care about cost? so many questions...
Honestly, i find it hard to justify a high caliber carry weapon. Not on any moral or legal grounds, but rather convenience. I would rather have something that is doesn't get in the way, doesn't weigh much, and that i can access easily.
Well that's kind of my question. Assume you want a round that fits various different firearms used for different purposes. Which woukd you prefer between those two?
Here's my two cents: Why are you fixated on wanting to use the same round in multiple guns? A .44 mag in a rifle is going to fall short compared to a .30 caliber rifle, but that's a hell of a hand gun round that sucks to shoot a lot. I think you might be better served going for a good pistol that you like and shoot well, and then get a good rifle.
It is a matter of simplifying the number of different ammunition one must amass and having those rounds be multi-purpose. If SHTF, I'd rather have a lot of 4 different rounds useable over many different weapons rather than fewer rounds per weapon stored for many specific weapons each of which use different roundsp.
Just get the 357. It's slightly more common and a tad cheaper (I believe) than 44. Certainly 38 special is gonna be cheaper than whatever 44 magnum's cheap cousin is. This will allow you to practice more.

.357 magnum which is also available in semi automatic. Look into the Coonan 1911.

.357 but only because I'm a fragile woman with tiny hands and .44 makes my wrist feel broken after two shots. At least in my experience thus far.

.357 it can take the lower pressure of a .38 special. this is a no brainer

44! But I've got the best shooting S&W 44 that was ever made so that could make me a little prejudiced.
