.357, honestly .308 for rifles is generally the historic Military round. I like Bill Burrs take that anything above a .22 is going to make you deaf and blind if used indoors and outdoors might be a little rough on your senses. Guns are LOUD so always wear ear protection. I think it is the concussive force from the barrel than the audibility.
And despite what people think a high velocity 22 lr is going to do bodies in close quarters. Subsonic rounds less so but you can get higher velocity loads for not much more
