That url error has been reported quite a number of times. Yeah it can be very annoying.
How about this: keep a table of user and last access time and request counter. As a page is requested if the last time was over, just for example, 5 seconds ago, clear the counter, otherwise bump it up. If the count gets too high consider that a malicious user. Maybe just ignore subsequent requests for an hour or log them out, versus deleting the account.
Deleting an account is completely unnecessary and a ridiculous over-reaction when you can just disable the account.
Side-note, the argument that there would be "outcry" if an account is deleted is ridiculous. 80% of the users have already left the platform due to this issue, and the void grows daily. My understanding of how denial of service works is you overload the server with requests. When voat was open this could come from an army of spambots. Every day this looks more and more like the truth. You can't DDOS a site with a closed environment requiring logins without being able to immediately identify the accounts used to perform the attack. How about this: keep a table of user and last access time and request counter. As a page is requested if the last time was over, just for example, 5 seconds ago, clear the counter, otherwise bump it up. If the count gets too high consider that a malicious user. Maybe just ignore subsequent requests for an hour or log them out, versus deleting the account.

My understanding of how denial of service works is you overload the server with requests. When voat was open this could come from an army of spambots. Now that you must be logged in, to get past voat.co a multitude of requests must be logged in. Surely the login used could be examined and blocked individually.
I suppose just hitting voat.co repeatedly could tie up the server, maybe have a separate server for that? Maybe there are tricks with delays for the voat,co login page that would be egregious for the posting pages?

Yeah I give credit to creating the site, and keeping it running, but beyond that, I'm not sure we can set the bar much lower for our expectations of Voat's leader. We 'consumers' (required to login as members, and also content posters) should be so grateful to be able share our own work and ideas on this honey-pot holding pen that is always in maintenance.
Why would Putt be afraid to get a PO box, request donations, or even risk lose this site altogether, when it's not monetized, no donations are taken, and he has no intention of growing Voat? So it's not about financial security. Then what's the motive for running the site? It must be free speech, but the logic doesn't make sense. If Voat cared so much about free speech (kinda strange to quarantine that message and not market yourself dontcha think?) to be so conservative and protective by not seeking funding, isn't it strange that Voat seems to take every action with this site that indicates Voat's administrators wish to lose the info war? Because if there is not a course correction, we all know, in a few years Voat will not exist. Either Putt is lying.....or an incompetent coward afraid of risk who refuses receiving help.

Ya know, I tried that whole "paying for" thing. Then voat stopped taking payments. Not saying it was by choice. Transparency is all some of us are asking for. The canary is dead and @puttitout is nowhere to be found lately. It's concerning. Some people aren't good at expressing their concern but something is obviously wrong here.

In case you're not aware, Voat has been blackballed by the credit card processing industry for years now. Even if those sites wanted to let Putt create an account there, their CC processor would force them to shut it down.

New Project 2 is open to everyone, they use a bank to handle their credit processing.
SubscribeStar is out of Russia. They seem to be using Russia's banking & credit systems after getting banned from PalPal and having problems with Visa & Mastercard. They're also using Paypal competitors Payoneer & Transferwise.

Yeah I've donated to the BitCoin address and as far as I'm concerned it the site needed some cash injections Putt would probably let us know.

Looking back on Voat & Putts history, nope.
Putt has taken long breaks from the platform a few times before, especially after chaotic periods.
Voat didn't stop taking payments, it was shoa'd by all payment processors. Then Putt didn't feel right taking money for a while because the waves were rocking the boat pretty hard & he didn't know if we'd still be here today, so he took down the bitcoin address. Then the angel arrived.
Besides, you never "paid for" Voat, you donated to something you believe in or enjoy to encourage it.

That's what BitCoin ATMs and local BitCoins are for. You pay cash for BitCoins and you either send them directly or use an anonymous wallet in between like the Daily Stormer's situation where their donation address gets flagged by many services.
