Check out Abel Danger's Field McConnell on this one. Those were drones and they had explosives on board to detonate all the jet fuel.
No CGI was used at all. Any video see of just the explosions and no planes is the result of someone removing the 10 or so frames with a plane in them. It's a hoax.

That's in reference to Avid Software and its ability to "mask" out certain parts of a TV picture and overlay graphics on it.
While it is possible they used Avid the only evidence is the shape of part of the fireball coming out the other side after impact. It's ambiguous. It could just be coincidence or maybe the fireball is in that shape because 10 nanoseconds earlier there was an aluminum plane nose and we're seeing the last seconds of the aluminum burning.
FYI aluminum will burn. In fact powdered aluminum is sometimes use in solid rocket fuel.
