Disagree on the 93 limit. I assume that's the limit to the number of people/organizations that can go into the automated documents, is that what you're saying? If there's more than 93, you just have serialized filings in the same case file, i.e. "Indictment 1 of 3, Indictment 2 of 3", etc. I do not know of any limit to the number of people.

That being said, it's extremely rare to do large numbers in any criminal case - from the prosecution standpoint, there's too much room for fuckery during the case with that many defendants involved.

I am definitely saying that the 50-60k aren't all Federal indictments (remember some actions are also taking place at the State level). It's a certainty that the majority of the 50-60k sealed PACER cases are search warrants/orders. That's how the government gathers evidence.

That being said, I absolutely agree that it's an extraordinary number, and hell yes there's a really sizeable chunk of indictments in that #. PLUS whatever is going on at the State level (and military - I keep leaving that out, and I shouldn't).

So, yeah, even if it's not close to 60k indictments, it's still massive compared to what has happened in the past. I'm hopeful that the douches who've been running our country into the ground get taken down. Just wish it would come soon.

Nope, there is no way to search for sealed indictments or search warrants. PACER only reports case files. You count the number that are sealed, but there is nothing in the information you get back to tell you whether it's a warrant, indictment or something else. It only tells you it's a case file, that it's under seal, and that it's either pending or closed.

Anybody who tells you anything different is not a PACER user.

Concealed case files? Ain't no such thing. The existence of every case is public record, even if that record is classified (in the case of FISA). Court's don't do secret star-chamber stuff.

Well, that tells me that there are civil cases (where indictments are not used, indictments are criminal process only) and that there are indictments in State courts, too. Ultimately, there might actually be around 50-60k, but they aren't all Fed.

And it's also possible that Q either 1) does not precisely understand those numbers, or 2) he's being misleading for a reason.

1. It means the activity in that file number is concluded. Those are almost certainly searches. There's a number of possible reasons why it's still under seal, but the most common are either a) that the search is finished but the warrant included language placing it under seal until the indictment is made public in order to keep from tipping the defendant(s), or b) no evidence was found for something really squeamish like CP, and the court determined that the indictment should remain sealed for a LONG period (but not forever) to prevent the person suspected of being subjected to unfair public reaction.
2. The 50-60k sealed case files are not all in DC. That # is the total of all sealed cases in every district in the US combined (with the exception of a district in GA, where their PACER system doesn't cover that kind of search.)
