Info about "Sealed Indictments" (QRV)

As a lawfag and advisor to law enforcement, here is something everyone should consider:

  1. The long list of sealed case files are not necessarily indictments.

  2. Most are, in fact, probably search warrants.

  3. Search warrants generally must be served on the person being searched (and/or suspect) at the time the search is conducted.

  4. HOWEVER, for electronic surveillance (wiretaps, stingray and GPS trackers, email/text/browsing histories) and on RARE OCCASIONS actual physical searches may be conducted surreptitiously, keeping the person/suspect unaware of the search, if the government petitions for such based on good cause to believe that either evidence will be destroyed or the suspect will abscond from prosecution.

  5. The secrecy is time-limited, but the government can continue to maintain those items under seal by renewing the petitions until the court determines that the items should be un-sealed or the government determines that the secrecy should be ended.

So:

A. Are there 60k indictments? Probably not, and there's no way to tell. It's extremely likely that there are significantly more than 1,000, though. However, there is a HUGE number of search warrants. Hmmmm...

B. So, what does the publicly known information tell us? Well, correlate the locations of the cases with the statutes related to the sealed cases. That should tell you A LOT.

So u r saying it’s 60k indictments and search warrants etc? Fine, but isn’t it still ridiculously out of whack numbers wise? There’s only 1-2 thousand of these per year and we just did 60k the last 12 months. Sealed indictments or search warrants, either way it’s extraordinary. And each search warrant might well lead to more indictments and crimes.

Don't think I'm trying to shillpost, please.

I am definitely saying that the 50-60k aren't all Federal indictments (remember some actions are also taking place at the State level). It's a certainty that the majority of the 50-60k sealed PACER cases are search warrants/orders. That's how the government gathers evidence.

That being said, I absolutely agree that it's an extraordinary number, and hell yes there's a really sizeable chunk of indictments in that #. PLUS whatever is going on at the State level (and military - I keep leaving that out, and I shouldn't).

So, yeah, even if it's not close to 60k indictments, it's still massive compared to what has happened in the past. I'm hopeful that the douches who've been running our country into the ground get taken down. Just wish it would come soon.

Right. Just trying to keep it in perspective. There’s most definitely something big happening whether these r indictments or not given the averages.
