November 2015 article: Online Art Auction Company Doubles Space in 30 Cooper Square

Paddle8, an online auction house and marketplace for art, jewelry and other objects, has signed a new lease for 10 years, expanding its space to 13,000 square feet at 30 Cooper Square, Commercial Observer has learned.

Asking rent in the building ranges from $60 to $70 per square foot. The landlord is the estate of the late artist Tom Wesselmann, which uses the name 30 Cooper Square Partnership LLC.

Thomas K. Wesselmann (February 23, 1931 – December 17, 2004) was an American artist associated with the Pop Art movement who worked in painting, collage and sculpture.

He was drafted into the US Army in 1952, but spent his service years stateside. During that time he made his first cartoons, and became interested in pursuing a career in cartooning. After his discharge he completed his psychology degree in 1954, whereupon he began to study drawing at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Cooper Union accepted him in 1956, and he continued his studies in New York.

Wesselmann also admired the work of Willem de Kooning, but he soon rejected action painting: “He realized he had to find his own passion he felt he had to deny to himself all that he loved in de Kooning, and go in as opposite a direction as possible."

Then and now, Wuagneux stuck out from a group that included union leaders and alleged mobsters from Chicago, New York, Miami and Fort Lauderdale....

....In 1983, in Arizona, Wuagneux was convicted of trafficking in stolen property and tampering with public records, state records show. There, he was sentenced to more than four years in prison, according to the Arizona Department of Corrections.

Wuagneux was released from the Arizona sentence in December 1988, department records show. It is unclear if the state and federal sentences were served concurrently.

A decade after his release, Wuagneux re-invented himself, in Las Vegas, and began building.

He formed Biltmore Vacation Resorts Inc., a timeshare company, in 1998. At the same time, he acquired a design firm and a publicly held shell corporation called Cyber Information Inc.

He also folded in Sage Design Builders Inc., a contractor led by his brother, Ed. Attempts to reach Ed Wuagneux, now 74, were unsuccessful. Cyber, traded over the counter, gave Wuagneux a platform to raise capital. He owned nearly two-thirds of Biltmore’s stock.

Though Biltmore lost money -- it had “incurred significant losses” with an accumulated deficit of more than $1.9 million, a Securities and Exchange Commission filing in July 2000 shows -- it had vast ambition.

It planned to develop a pair of timeshare projects -- the 264-unit Biltmore Vacation Village on 20 acres in Bullhead City, Ariz., and St. Tropez Vacation Resort, in Las Vegas -- at a cost of $203 million.It could not be determined whether either project reached fruition. Biltmore’s telephone number has been disconnected, and numbers for each of the resorts go unanswered.

St. Tropez, across from the Hard Rock Cafe Hotel & Casino, is in the process of being converted to the Rumor resort, after being acquired by Siegel Group Properties.

Wuagneux died in February 2002, at age 68, in Broward County, records show. By then, his convictions and organized crime associations were long behind him.
