so last time we talked about the sks
today well talk about the gun the soviets used before that
the nagant rifle
ok ok youre already complaining
clammy its a mosin nagant named after sergei mosin blablsbls ok shh
i know
this gun has an interesting history with drama
so back in the 1800s
lol
yeah this is an old design guys
back in the 1800s there was a revolution in arms design
it started around the mid 1800s and went on for decades
exciting time
we got stuff like
metallic cartridges
repeating rifles and revolvers
telescopic sights
it was really cool
so in like the 1870s the russians got into a fight with the ottomans
the russians had a history of doing this back when there were ottomans
but there was a problem
the russians were using single shot berdan rifles
like its a single shot breech loader
drop the block and pop one round in
meanwhile the turks had some slickass winchester repeaters from america goin like
pew pew pew pew pew pew
and the russians were like geeeeeeez this sucks
so they put out specifications for a new rifle
the round it would shoot is the 7.62x54r
guys this is a pretty good round
its still in service to this day
one of the oldest military rounds still in service
its like 120 years old
its kinda tricky tho
you see that very wide base sticking out
thats the rim
most other rounds dont stick out like that because they feed better
but rimmed rounds were still a thing in the friggin 1890s
so the russians were like hey build something to shoot this round
and a few guys submitted their designs
the two important ones being russian army officer sergei mosin
and belgian weapons designer leon nagant
they sent in a couple iterations and the committee refined their specs and got new iterations from the designers
and there was some
shall we call it
borrowing in design elements
so best we can figure mosin put in an interrupter in his magazine so that the rim on the cartridge wouldnt get stuck on the next round and jam the rifle
since mosin was an army officer this became property of the russian government and a state secret
then nagant took that idea and fiddled with it and patented it
plus made a couple other improvements like a simpler magazine floorplate and a cool stripper clip
so in the end the committee liked mosins rifle and used the small tweaks from nagant
but nagant was pissed
he complained that he patented the interruptor system first and should get the whole prize money
meanwhile the russians were like uh bro you stole that from our guys prototype and spread state secrets
but nagant was a pretty good designer and one of the few independent guys who hadnt been snatched up by some other country and the russians didnt want to lose his business
so in the end they just gave him his money
gave mosin a promotion
and tsar nicholas iii himself finalized the name simply as
three line rifle model 1891
a line is a tenth of an inch
so it just meant thirty caliber
a lot of times they just called it the model 1891
nagant stopped being mad and went on to design the very interesting nagant 1895 revolver for russia
its unique
mayble ill talk about that next lol
anyway back to this gun
which ill just call the mosin now that i explained all that drama
the mosin is a five shot bolt action rifle
its in the same power as the 8mm mauser and the .30-06
which is to say itll kill most anything outside of africa
its a very very simple system
very few parts and very simple parts at that
its also exteemely strong
straight up abuse is not enough to defeat the mosin
the mosin laughs in your girly face
and you have to work it rough
hit it like a mail order bride lol
she likes it
that stock is extremely durable and has a lovely steel plate at the end in case you need to crush any skulls
the sights go to like friggin 2000 m
incidentally the mosin sights were directly carried over to the sks the ak and the svd
theyre pretty solid
the original rifle is super long
and the bayonet is like a foot and a half
its over six feet put together
guys its kinda ridiculous lol
so im just gonna talk about the main few variants
the main one is the model 1891/30
91/30 for short
its got a couple slight differences from the original 1891
its slightly shorter than the original
like by a couple inches
metric sights instead of premetric russian measurement in arshins
which was like one pace while marching
then in 1938 they made a shorter version
its only 40 inches long
and towards the end of wwii they created the model 1944
the big change was they added a side folding bayonet
this is very similar to the mechanism later put on the sks
those are the three main types
lots of countries made them
they each have their own peculiarities
there were also sniper versions
in fact the famous soviet and finnish snipers of wwii used mosins a lot
my personal favorite is the m38
its just the most practical
its shorter than the 91/30
and lighter than the m44
its compact but packs a punch
i might need to take out some feral hogs with that bad boy
ill let you know if i do lol
like the sks there are a lot of these is the us today
the market was flooded for a while and they were ridiculously cheap
guys i dunno if you know what a hipoint is
but i bought two mosins for the price of one hipoint
lol
so there is a large aftermarket for mosin accessories
new stocks sights bipods scope mounts
but again
overall id just recommend leaving it as is
it works just fine and is super simple and bombproof
if you want to hunt itll take out anything in north america
it has a lot of kick
the m38 even moreso
but its not super punishing so its fun to shoot a real rifle
the accuracy is probably adequate
some can be pretty good but you kinda have to work and research
others are arsenal refurbished and are mostly accurate enough to hit a body at range but nothing more
but this is the kind of rifle where a hit to the shoulder might still be disabling
a real cool thing about these is its almost guaranteed some commie soldier held it
maybe he even shot at nazis
or got his head blown off lol
holding that kinda history in your hands is really something
you look at the soviet crest stamped into it and see the big year it was made
1943
you know its seen some shit
that kind of direct connection to history isnt something you can find often anymore
if youre the kind of person who bathes in cosmoline
then the mosin is for you lol

Fairly honest review of the Moisin.

thx
my next post is tuesday
its gonna be pretty good lol

The closeup of the bayonet is good stuff. The round is like a .308 super.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
heck the 308 is just a short '06!
clamhurt_legbeard ago
read my previous article too
Trish_Pantscotti ago
Oh, I will.
I'm itching to make a new rifle purchase but I need to figure out what I want. I've always previously skipped that part. The 223/556 platform is so versatile and affordable for any kind of regular shooting that it's my starting point. I might just build the fucker myself, we'll see. I might just rebuild my current AR.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
oh man
i can help you spend way too much time thinking
Trish_Pantscotti ago
Thanks, expect some dialogue. These colder months are rifle-shooting time! I'm going to renew my club membership!
clamhurt_legbeard ago
ya i specifically stick around to chat
its in the title
these are guns i like lol
thedirtypuma ago
I can't mod you here cause you have 10 subverses that you are already modding.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
ok i fixed that
thedirtypuma ago
Sorry for showing up so late. I always thought it was interesting how they didn't make a special sniper version of the mosin; they just used the most accurate of the bunch and stuck a scope on it.
I bought one for a hundred dollars and spent another hundred on a spam can of 440 rds back in the day.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
heck ya
and those 440rds hit hard too
ExpertShitposter ago
Think the 7.62x54r now officially holds the record for the longest service life of all. The biggest problem with the rim is double stacked magazines. Previously, everyone was making single stacks so it wasn't a big deal. When the SVT Dragunov came around, they apparently spent an entire year prototyping its double stack mag before they got a design that works 100% reliably. And it still holds only 10, while looking like it should be 15. On the flip side, it is considered "inherently" accurate due to repeatable head-spacing off the rim, that results in repeatable rifling engagement.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
thats pretty cool i hadnt heard that about the dragunov
im gonna check it out

I just want to take the opportunity to say thank you @clamhurt_legbeard for sharing your knowledge with us here. Truly every time I learn something new that is fun and exciting too!
Thank you so much for this!
clamhurt_legbeard ago
i like a lot of guns
youre gonna hear a lot lol

Indeedy McGreedy... you have no idea how broad I would smile if that was me, for real!
Such a cute photo!

I love Mosins. I have been collecting them for a couple of years. I have four right now. I am currently looking for a hex barrel and a pre 1940 long barrel.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
oh nice
my dad eventually started copying me and my gun purchases
he got a hex receiver 91/30
what are the 4 you have
i have a 1944 m38 and a 1943 m91/30
DillHoleBagHands ago
1936 91/30 converted to an Archangel stock. The original stock was water damaged and cracked. Was not really safe for shooting. The pre1940 metal work is night and day with these rifles. The closer you get to 1945, the sloppier the metal work looks.
1942 M38 no bayonet. My favorite out of the pack. Kicks like a mule and hits dead on everytime.
1943 91/30. This one is my second favorite. Poor old girl is battle hardend. Multiple retooling marks and some done by some old Ruskie.
1945 M38 with bayonet "The Problemed Child". Shoots about 6 inches low and I have no clue why. I think the rifling is shot.
It is an addiction now. Classic Firearms got in a new shipment of Mosins today and it was hard for me to not order any.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
for the shorty with the bayonet
have you tried sighting it in with the bayonet out
DillHoleBagHands ago
I have not. I have only had it out once. Baynot out nakes that much of a difference?
clamhurt_legbeard ago
theyre sighted in with the bayonet out
so deffo might bring it in
DillHoleBagHands ago
Hmmmmm worth a shot I suppose.
btw I own v/MosinNagant if you are interested. Sadly not much there.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
oh cooooool
maybe i can adds some stuff
DillHoleBagHands ago
I would appreciate it. I have a couple of other pages slide because I don't have the time anymore.

The Nugget. Didn't click, by the way. I'm very familiar with this rifle already. Some of them aren't bad, but they were banged together by Russian peasant women.
I avoid almost all online firearm discussions. People are, shall we say, a bit more opinionated than I care to deal with, with this subject.
Nadeshda ago
I hear you Sir and I agree it' tough sometimes to have good conversations here. You are exception to that rule though. Have a beautiful day!
TheBuddha ago
LOL You're on today's to-do list!
I'm using a pretty fancy to-do list software app that I kinda sorta edited to make suit my purposes. You're on it! "email nadeshda" is the most recent item on the list.
I just haven't gotten there yet. ;-)
I did my guitar practice and completed 1.5 hours of PT (in 45 minute chunks). I'll probably only do three hours worth of PT today. It's largely up to me, but they're suggesting I take it easy for a few days, 'cause I have some radiant knee pain and they don't want to aggravate that further.
Did I tell ya that I took three steps?!? I did, too! I'm pretty damned proud of that. They were extremely difficult, but I did it. That's like weeks and weeks ahead of schedule!
Ol' Buddha's gonna buck the odds and make a complete recovery. I can tell! I can even lift my leg up to put it into the bed. I normally (since the injury) either lift it with my hands, get assistance to lift it, or loop the right leg under the left leg and lift with that. However, I'm now able to lift it up on its own power and sort of throw it at the bed. It's awkward, but I'm pretty damned pleased with it.
Nadeshda ago
Wow oh wow!!! You took 3 steps? That is awesome news!!! Best day ever! I am so proud of you Sir! You are such an inspiration to me! You have to know though that somedays you plum make me feel terrible, but only because I get depressed that I can't seem to get around to do everything I want to do. :/
Oh you, your news makes my heart glad!
I just logged in to see @Rotteuxx Book binding project, not sure if you saw it, pretty cool.
Forgive me as I have been having really weird days lately. I think the weather, environment and stuff just driving away at my mood and temperament.
Anyway let me not get stuck here, even though I could speak to you for hours... I gotta stay focused or I am going to do my head in; I have been having horrible thoughts like plum disappearing from Voat and everything online and going completely dark as I constantly seem to let people down including myself and I am pretty sick of it... :(
Egh... this too will pass... I am not too worried as I have this annoying habit of bouncing back, anyways have a beautiful day Sir!
TheBuddha ago
I shall, at some point today, send you an email. Vamoose! I shall see you there.
freedumbz ago
Ah yiss moist nuggets. I love me a moist nugget. I have one too and love it. It shoots the accurate and I can use it to impale upstanding members of the African community when they visit me through my bedroom window.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
what model do you have
m44
freedumbz ago
Plain ol 91/30. I like me a classic gun.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
true stuff
my 91/30 is in better condition than my m38
but i think the m38 is more practical
so handy
Battlefat ago
All hail Bubba Mosin...seriously though, great job
clamhurt_legbeard ago
lol thx
id like to acknowledge sergei mosin and leon nagant for their help
Nadeshda ago
Oh geez I love this! Sexy rim bullet and feeder business and overall a nice looking rifle!
Okay Question it can’t be over 6 feet put together gether, that’s taller then me?
clamhurt_legbeard ago
ok maybe its not quite six feet
but its still friggin long lol
i admit i have my m38 with me not the long one lol
Nadeshda ago
See I didn’t think as much... still blooming long and beautiful!
clamhurt_legbeard ago
my memory exaggerated it
i know its way too long for inside play lol
Nadeshda ago
This is too funny... :)
clamhurt_legbeard ago
lol
oh you
it so is
i own two
i will show you
Nadeshda ago
When? :)
clamhurt_legbeard ago
i meant show you a good picture of the length
but it wasnt as long as i remember
but heres my beat up m38 lol
Nadeshda ago
Don’t you just hate that, when that happens? Lol :p
Lovely picture! :)
drakesdoom2 ago
Original rifles with fixed bayonet are indeed over six foot long stock to bayonet point.
Nadeshda ago
That’s something! I love the idea of it but would need to practice walking with a spear like rifle on my back. I wonder how heavy?
clamhurt_legbeard ago
around 9 lbs
or a little over 4 kg
Nadeshda ago
Not bad... easy enough, a healthy new born weight...
