guys
/u/nadeshda signed me up for a year long series of articles here
and im like man thats a lot of articles
so im gonna start talking about guns i like
there are a lot of guns i like so this should last me a while lol
and i figure ill start with the sks
the sks is a good gun
its also from an interesting time in history
which gives it a unique story
it was designed in the soviet union during wwii by a guy named simonov
everybody in wwii had discovered that the rifles theyd been using were more powerful than needed in most of the battles theyd been facing
their soldiers could all shoot out to like 1000 m
but nobody was ever made contact more than like 400 m away
this meant their soldiers were carrying ammunition that was heavier than needed
if they were given a lighter round they could carry more ammo for twice the pew pew
the nazis had created a smaller round to do just that
they called it the 7.92 mm kurz
kurz is how you say short in nazi
it was literally just the 7.92 x 57 mauser round shortened
then they nazis made some rifles to go with it
these were pretty effective at murdering soviets
so the soviets were like aw dang we need to do that
the soviets did a similar thing to the nazis and just shortened their 7.62 x 54r round
this means they can keep some of the machinery for drilling barrels and whatnot so its efficient
they worked on this round in 1943 so it was called the m43
then they needed something to shoot it in
thats when simonov got involved
so simonov had designed some other stuff
and he was experienced with the soviet arsenal system
so for construction techniques he went with arctic birchwood and milled steel
this is more time consuming and heavy and expensive
but soviet industry had been milling things for many years
so it was easy to adapt workers and machinery
but simonov also saw advancements in other countries designs
so he made a rifle that would shoot the new intermediate m43 round
instead of the bolt actions most were using he made it semiautomatic like the american garand
but with the smaller ammunition it held 10 rounds instead of 8
and you could load it with clips but unlike the garand the clip was disposible
the bolt carrier would lock back on an empty magazine and had feed lips so you could slide a new clip right in
it uses a short stroke gas system
that means gas is bled off from the barrel and pushes a piston over the barrel
that piston goes back to push another little piston but doesnt go all the way
then the bolt carrier ejects the spent case and loads a new one
the bolt is kinda neat because it slips down into the receiver to lock
the entire fire control group comes out in one assembly
the whole rifle is really easy to strip and doesnt need any tools to disassemble
it has a compartment in the butt to store a cleaning kit
i love this and think its required on all rifles
so its semi auto
just bang and dont bang
10 rd fixed magazine
loaded by clips or single rounds
its kinda heavy for what it is
which gives it really mild recoil
definitely fun to shoot
has a bayonet that locks forward or back
has around a 400 m range
overall its just a very simple and robust system
it was adopted by the soviets as the sks45 in 1945
and it was given to and produced in many soviet allies
lots of them are available on the us surplus market
lol i wont tell you how much i paid for mine
but lets just say
its tripled in value
invest in guns
but clammy you ask
if its such a great gun why have i never seen it used
well
there was this guy called kalashnikov
he competed against simonov with a carbine of his own
but he sucked and his gun sucked and the sks was picked
so then kalashnikov went back to the drawing board and ended up making the ak47
detachable 30rd magazine
select fire
it was a no brainer
after the ak47 got adopted the sks45 was obsolete
in just two years
but it was still a great gun and was used by second line troops
and by guerrilla armies
the vietcong used them a lot
and youll see them used today for hunting and plinking
its light enough to carry but hits hard enough to take out a deer
in fact the terminal effectiveness and bullet drop is similar to the .30-30
which is another classic deer cartridge
there are tons of aftermarket accessories for it too
most are junk lol
people try to turn them into an ak and it doesnt work out
there are extended magazines
that fail
there are sights and scope attachments that replace the top cover
which wobble all around
basically if you have an sks i suggest you just leave it as originally made
its an excellent carbine and will serve you well just as simonov designed it

Nice article. Only commie rifle I have is a Nugget. Fun to shoot. Kicks like something that kicks really hard.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
subsequent shots relocate your shoulder dislodged by the first shot
lol
ExpertShitposter ago
Here are some mods. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDLIBT1zGFU
Some people feel this ruins the rifle, i happen to like the look of this one in particular, and its objectively more practical.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
that rear sight right there
exactly what im talking about
good luck holding zero
sling mount looks good
one thing definitely true about the yugoslavian rifles in particular
theyre heavier than any of the others
heavier wood and added components will do that lol
ExpertShitposter ago
Why? He didn't mount it to the dust cover.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
what is it mounted to
its just going through the retaining pin hole with a single attachment
im highly suspicious of it
ExpertShitposter ago
Oh, i thought he tapped it.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
thatd definitely be a lot better

I have a super grade made in Tula that I decided to just leave in the grease and never shoot it. If shit doesn't hit the fan it'll be worth a ton one day I figure. I also have a chinese made sks, which I have gone ahead and made it tactical by putting on a better stock and a few other upgrades. I shoot this gun the most often just because it's cheap to shoot and still a big gun. Sure it's cheaper to shoot a .22 but it's nowhere near as fun as shooting my sks. Thanks for the info, the only thing I really knew about sks rifles was that the Tula factory ones are supposedly the best.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
russian rifles are beautiful
but a lot of chinese rifles are high quality too
a lot of countries made them and each is a little different
but theyre all super fun to shoot
freedumbz ago
Sks was first rifle I bought myself. I still have it. I like it. Good post btw I look forward to moar
clamhurt_legbeard ago
heck ya me too
itll keep running forever

I will leave this here: Shooting an SKS
clamhurt_legbeard ago
its seriously fun
jump but not a heavy kick
not snappy
super fun
Nadeshda ago
I am going to have to try one out... have to put my thinking cap on how, pretty rare and the price you said was high right?
clamhurt_legbeard ago
not super rare
but i got while the gettin was good
looks like 500-600
they could show up in a local gun store easily tho
6gorillion ago
Wow you Americans are getting ripped off on the sks's! My Tula one I got as a Christmas deal at cabelas it was $500 for the gun with a crate of 1500 rounds of the corrosive ammo. My Chinese one I bought from a friend for $200 and then spent another $400 on crap for it lol. Even right now cabelas has the Chinese ones for $229 Canadian. https://www.cabelas.ca/product/110383/chinese-sks-semi-auto-rifle-w-hardwood-stock
clamhurt_legbeard ago
mine was 150 american
excellent condition lol
i dont recommend comparing deals with me
ive scored hard over and over lol
stay tuned next month for an even cheaper set i got lol
DasReich ago
Great synopsis, except for two things.
"Kurz is how you say short in German."
"these were pretty effective at culling Soviets."
clamhurt_legbeard ago
lol cry more
you look like the kind of guy who uses punctuation
Nadeshda ago
I just love the compartment in the butt to store the cleaning kit, too cool! The flexible bayonet just wow! Are these pictures of your SKS?
clamhurt_legbeard ago
no i actually dont have mine with me
mine is yugoslavian
looks kinda like this
the yugoslavians did a lot of changes
see yugoslavia was communist
but not super close to the soviet union
they saw what had already happened to hungary and poland
so they kept their distance
and the soviets didnt even give them the ak for a long time
so the yugos took the basic sks design in 1959
and then in 1966 they added a grenade launcher up front to shoot 22mm nato standard rifle grenades
then they put a gas cutoff to use the grenades
a folding grenade sight up front
that yellow dot is a sun charging glow in the dark sight
and it has a thick rubber buttpad
heres what it looks like when you use the grenade launcher
Nadeshda ago
Lol, that is too cool, that grenade is sweet! Oh boy his giggles in the end of that, what fun!
Definitely a sexy looking rifle there, wow! That old school wood and style, awesome aesthetics!!

Lol, what did you like most about the article?
lion4liberty ago
I did not read it. To much time on the chans and I am now triggered by reddit spacing.
Nadeshda ago
REEEEEE! Lol, it’s going to be okay! :)
clamhurt_legbeard ago
lol are you serious
that there is a slippery slope towards capitalization
no thanks
thedirtypuma ago
Nice review.
These magezines get good reviews and go for 30 dollars online. I would try one out if I had a sks.
I didn't know about the cleaning supply tube in the stock. That's a very nice feature.
6gorillion ago
I have 3 of those magazines, they are all unfortunately pinned to 5 rounds because I live in Canada though.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
ya it holds the cleaning kit
brush
screwdriver
crown protector
handle
jag
punch
and the cleaning rod goes under the barrel
locked in by the bayonet
everything should have this
Nadeshda ago
Geez this really is useful and I agree all should have this feature!
Redditsdead ago
I've got an original Tula. Love it. Would never dress it up to look all tactical. I hate that shit when done to an old gun. Maybe if I had a norinco.
2 notes, most surplus ammo for it is corrosive, so clean it regularly. Also, the butt stock is short on purpose and no, it's not because Russians have short arms. It's made for the giant winter coats they wore.
6gorillion ago
I'm with you, I left the Tula in the cosmoline and tactical'd up my chinese sks.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
oh good point about corrosive ammo
maybe im about to start a fight
but guys just use lots of water
anybody who tells you to use ammonia didnt look up the chemistry
hose it off
Redditsdead ago
I just clean it like I would any other gun. To each their own.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
its all good
thats what the commies did

This is awesome and I genuinely learnt stuff I did not know... too cool!
@thebuddha, @Expertshitposter @MyDearWatson @EyeoftheChampion @battlefat
Get in here this is some interesting stuff going on!
TheBuddha ago
LOL I was sleeping.
Nadeshda ago
Well hello you! How you doing?
TheBuddha ago
Much the same. You?
Nadeshda ago
Not too shabby Sir! :)
TheBuddha ago
Excellent!
I'm in good spirits, though that's pretty normal for me. I'll probably be cracking jokes on my deathbed and telling people to not worry 'bout it and trying to get them to stop their crying and shit.
Nadeshda ago
You are not dying, lol having mono too will pass and yes the good Spirits indeed are worth pursuing :)
I think your attitude towards it is sometimes melodramatic but sooo funny and is certainly fun to read about, but I am concerned you are not receiving optimal care, you are not a speing chicken you know...
TheBuddha ago
Wrong!
I am too dying!
Just not from mono! ;-)
I am sore as hell today, but my throat is actually less sore than yesterday. I still have no energy. I sat up long enough to write an article and then got prone right afterwards. It sucks, because I'm used to being pretty energetic.
I can deal with the pain, I've got opiates. My daughter says my spleen is a bit more swollen today, but not even remotely dangerously so. It feels like what I picture a heart attack feels like - except I don't know, 'cause I've never had a heart attack. They're kinda in the same area, so it applies pressure to the lung and heart on the left side.
It's the damned lack of energy that gets to me. It's even hard to concentrate.
That part is something I'm not used to. That's the part that really sucks. Pain? I'll get over that. Having no energy? This is wasted time. It's time when I can't even really be productive in much of any capacity.
Man, I'm going to be a grumpy old man, if old age is like that.
Nadeshda ago
You will have to start living through the actions of others when you get older and use your vibrant personality to continue to motivate people to goodness. You getting old will be fine, you just have to shift gears that is all. You could always hire me as your PA, I look after really old people, all the time.
Noo problem... ;)
TheBuddha ago
I'll probably just do lots and lots of cocaine!
I'm gonna be a hit at the bingo hall!
Nadeshda ago
Lol... watch out those bingo ladies are serious and you could cause a riot...
TheBuddha ago
Oh, they are a group of ladies not to be trifled with. Man, I do now kinda want to see old ladies playing bingo on cocaine. I'm pretty sure that'd be the best day ever!
Nadeshda ago
I have a game scheduled for 3:30 on Friday, get yer arse over here, lol :)
TheBuddha ago
?
clamhurt_legbeard ago
ya
i could go on for a while like this lol
Nadeshda ago
Man I enjoyed the article a lot, I am so stoked about this... freagin too cool!!!!
We did another thing Clammy, we did! :D
Thank you!!!
clamhurt_legbeard ago
lol
im glad youre so excited

Nice overview, I was already familiar with the SKS but read through anyway-- this was quite entertaining and taught me a few interesting facts I didn't know about it. I like your stance on modifications, I feel the same about my Mosin Nagant-- Bubba nooooo! Speaking of the Mosin, it's another great Soviet rifle. I can get about a 1" group at 50 yards with irons if I focus and it's just too much fun. Maybe if I sell my 30/30 I'll get an SKS... it seems redundant to have two intermediate .30 caliber cartridge carbines.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
dont tell anybody
but
the mosin might be next months topic lol
i have a friend who keeps mentioning pig hunting
my m38 might need to get me some bacon
Battlefat ago
For my first commie rifle, make mine an SKS. Well done, clammy
clamhurt_legbeard ago
damn straight
me too
but i got lots more commie guns after lol
they will have their turns
Rellik88 ago
Had a Norinco SKS paratrooper which had a shorter barrel. Fun gun to shoot.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
yesssssss
same bombproof design but a little bit shorter and lighter
the so-called paratrooper was made for the american commercial market
never used by any military
but still an excellent gun
imma little jealous
i dont have any chinese weapons
Rellik88 ago
I would still have it but I traded it for a Henry repeating rifle.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
dude
never get rid of guns
there is only one single gun i dont own anymore
and it was stolen
Rellik88 ago
Well. Heres the story. Of my backpage gun trades. So I started with a Ruger P95. Loved it but wanted a rifle. Traded that $350 gun for the SKS worth about $400. Had it shot it for a year or two. Then traded it for a brand new Henry Repeating Rifle in 45-70. Fucking nice gun. Then I traded that to a Henry collector for a Sig 1911 worth $1000. So in a bout 5 years. I spent $350 and ended up with a $1000 1911. Worth it. :)
clamhurt_legbeard ago
hahaha
not too bad
.45-70 is a great cartridge
leaves holes the size of your thumb lol
