When someone can make you feel emotions - excited, laugh, cry, etc. people tend to become attached. Being a fan gives them a sense of belonging to others that also enjoy the same emotions provided by the entertainment.

Actors have a strange high status in our society because of their wealth, and because of all the attention and recognition by so many people that they garner as celebrities. People envy their success and their status, therefore they subconsciously see them as greater-than citizens.
