I'm sorry, but I'm confused...so PIA is the "angel" and they got the source code in return for their investment? Is the source code not open source...in other words...how do you "give away" open source code?

Owner got jewed into giving up the source code before the check cleared. Now Mosad aren't paying (surprise surprise) and they've gotten whatever exploit from the sourced they needed to get any user data they were after. Now that they're done the site is shutting down.
Do we have any reason to believe this, besides the timeline and what put said about the investor? I never really thought of voat as a real secure place to talk. I just don't care, and I come here anyways.

easy, the author owns the copyright and can relicense at will, it doesn't affect the published, open source version.

The only PIA I know of is Private Internet Access, which is an Israeli owned VPN service.
