Just checked and I can't see it on my end. What browser are you using?

moderator99 ago

Something else to note. The QRV pages can't be downloaded, unlike other voat subs. Just found this out yesterday. Try it yourself. Save the page and then go see if you got it. Then try /v/GreatAwakening.

Some Joos behind the scenes here. I've always suspected it, mods included.

moderator99 ago

Why don't you explain for us what you're talking about? What is fingerprinting, if not using ink and rolling fingers on a piece of paper? Explain!!!

Broc_Lia ago

He's suggesting that that pattern of bars and stripes is used to identify any user that takes a screenshot of a page on voat. Effectively acting as a fingerprint for their account.

Only trouble is, this doesn't seem to be happening to anyone else, and it only occasionally happens for him, so it's more likely to be a rendering artifact in his browser.

moderator99 ago

It would be a very poor method of doing that.... So poor that I questioned what was meant.

If anyone wanted to id a user whio views a particular page or even part of a page, there are far more covert and effective means to do so that wouldn't leave signs like that. The OP is an idiot.

TheAmerican ago

Ha ha ha I was wondering when someone else would notice this. You already answered your questions. Why do you think I keep making the posts about us all being willing participants in being spied on.

Rajadog20 ago

What? What use would a physical barcode on your screen be to tracking you?

Are you planning on printing out posts and crossing off your name with a marker?? They can already see who posts what, how would this help?

Broc_Lia ago

I don't think this is an example of fingerprinting, but it could potentially be used to track dissemination of voat screenshots through social media.

Rajadog20 ago

That would be useless as your username shows up when you post..

This fingerprinting would be used to determine the leaker of a screenshot that was classified or under NDA, where the user tries to hide their identity

Broc_Lia ago

It could be used to link your voat account to other social media accounts. For example, if I consistantly posted voat screencaps to facebook or reddit, they could make a reasonable claim that I controlled the account the screencaps were taken from.

Rajadog20 ago

They already know who you are on facebook..

Broc_Lia ago

Yes, and with fingerprinting they could link that identity to a voat account.

Which could be a big problem if you live in cuckistan or germany.

Rajadog20 ago

If they have enough access to the site to fingerprint everyones account... they already know who you are, and what you're posting...

Broc_Lia ago

Not necessarily. Accout creation is locked down currently, but if it opens up again it'd be easy enough to create one with a throwaway email and a VPN.

Omnidempotent ago

Even if that is a fingerprint... how would anyone use it?

Rajadog20 ago

Exactly. What are they going to do, remote in to your PC to look at your webpage and not look at the user name??

mf1776 ago

Your video card is shit. Your browsing sessions are tracked without you ever seeing visual effects.

Fuhrer1488 ago

ive never seen that before, im gonna start looking for it.

Armpit_and_Ass ago

I don't even see what the picture is supposed to be of.

CheeseboogerHimself ago

When I pull the page up and down it makes a record-scratching noise!

AlphaAndTheOmega ago

I seriously reccommend reinstalling your graphics drivers with DDUDisplay Driver Uninstaller. Do a full driver uninstall and follow all the instructions. Then reinstall your browser.

NotHereForPizza ago

I wonder if the ancient truth teller @zook could have some insight for us.

Isn't it weird how someone like that brought up shadowbanning, while explaining that he worked on the site code, only to be immediately dismissed each and every time Putt... I mean @PeaceSeeker has ever been brought in to the conversation?

How many things are the admins not telling us? What goats were hired to help with site code? Why was @Crensch considered? Has @Crensch ever been at odds with the site owner and/or the site owner's friends?

Oh boy, you guys are in for it.

DickTick ago

Well if youre not using a strong VPN to be on here, or anywhere on the internet for that matter, then you're an idiot that knows nothing, or simply doesn't care, about operational security.

If you are running a VPN then you simply chuckle at posts like these.

Rajadog20 ago

Until the one time your VPN isn't up and it doesn't matter anymore

Fuckyounigger ago

The only way to get an actual screen shot of a webpage that is on your computer is to have a chrome extension I know because I’ve made one that does that exact thing... it originally was supposed to be a mini map of a webpage that filled in when you scrolled

zak_the_mac ago

That's not a barcode, that's a browser glitch. I bet the size of the gaps between bars depends on how fast you scroll. When you see it next, try scrolling very very slowly, pixels by pixel. You'll likely see the bars change to be veyy dense, or disappear entirely.

DickTick ago

We don't take too kindly to logic around here! Shakes fist

WatchListMe ago

Ok redditor

SandHog ago

This seems like the most likely explanation to me given that it seems random, isn't reproducible and noone else seems to have had it happen to them.

blumen4alles ago

Most hopeful explanation too.

LostandFound ago

Can you give an example of a page where this has occurred?

Nosfewratsjews ago

Sure. Next time I see it I'll link the page, too. I did this one on the fly and going back to the page I screencapped it from it's not visible now.

Appears dynamic. Sometimes it's in the middle of the page. Sometimes it's along the side-bar. It always scrolls with the page to make sure it's visible on the screen.

LostandFound ago

Ta I will keep en eye, what browser you using?

Nosfewratsjews ago

Waterfox.

watitdew ago

idk man i just tested it, fucked with the brightness/contrast, zoomed in..i got nothing.

TheTrigger ago

Me too... I even fucked with different light filtering and did everything I could think of, and it seems fine. Methinks the only problem here is that OP needs a better video card.

watitdew ago

Could be browser related as well. IDK. I'm not worried.

Nosfewratsjews ago

It's dynamic. It only shows up every now and then. It always scrolls with the page.

DickTick ago

Sounds like a retarded way to track someone then...

RM-Goetbbels ago

Those are just for my NSA buddies, nothing to worry about at all. Just keep posting, they need to laugh too.

blumen4alles ago

What the fuck?

SandHog ago

Is it just on Voat or is your device (phone?) doing it on other sites too?

Nosfewratsjews ago

Only on Voat. I'm not retarded enough to log into Voat on a mobile device, ever. Does the same thing on a Linux system and a Windows system. Randomly injects into the middle of the page on some posts, randomly injects on the outside bars on main pages.

I've observed this for quite some time. Ironically, I first noticed it when the warrant canary died - though it could have been there before that.

WokieDokie ago

I'm not retarded enough to log into Voat on a mobile device, ever

honest question: why is it bad to log in with the phone ?

Nosfewratsjews ago

Put simply, a computer can still be (somewhat) hardened.

A phone is a device you pay money for the privilege of a company selling every piece of data it can harvest by spying on you. Government backdoors are built right into phones from the ground up.

WokieDokie ago

ok. thx for the info.

blumen4alles ago

I have never seen anything like that on Voat. Did you do anything special to capture that?

WatchListMe ago

It would be in the JavaScript. Check the code

Nosfewratsjews ago

Night mode and adjusted both contrast and brightness until I saw it, but you can clearly see it on the screenshot either way.

blumen4alles ago

Contrast and brightness on your monitor or in Photoshop-type software of the screenshot?

I did a screenshot and messed with levels but did not see that.

Can you post the entire screenshot or link where you saw that?

Nosfewratsjews ago

It's no longer present on the page where I screenshot it from. It's dynamic. I'll ping you next time I capture one.

blumen4alles ago

Thanks. I saw your other comment after I made that one, don't mean to make you repeat yourself. I will be looking for it myself.

SandHog ago

Huh, no idea. I don't see them when I screenshot stuff.

Nosfewratsjews ago

It's not on all pages and not frequently that it renders. I can only see it in nightmode and with brightness and contrast adjusted.

The screenshot shows it clear as day.

SandHog ago

Yeah, I can see it in your image but I've never seen them on anything that I've taken a screen shot of. Can you find a page where it is reproducible?

Nosfewratsjews ago

It's no longer visible on the page I screencapped it from, so it would appear to be dynamic.

Crackrocknigga ago

Looks like you just solved the mystery of the warrant canary.

Broc_Lia ago

When you say "embedded" have you actually found some code generating it?

Gotta say I agree with peaceseeker though, if it's only showing up for you some of the time, I don't think this is a tracking technique.
