So, shit went down. Woopidy fucking do.
Let's get a realistic view of what happened. Admin stepped out for holiday. Nobody was really put in charge during that time to time and then @gabara fucked everything up (Thanks Gabara).
This is actually more normal then you would think. I sit on a 20k user based server for my company. We're on a shit budget and I'm really the only one pulling any weight (diversity hires and pajeets). Stuff goes down when I leave. The servers fear me and do shit when I'm not there. It's normal. The fact that it happened on an internet facing application is NORMAL.
But, NDA's. Not likely. But, DDos. Doesn't look like that (we'd have timed out). But, Cloudflare. Had nothing to do with it or we would have been pulling errors from there. Shit went down with the app, not any exterior bullshit. This is actually what I would call A NORMAL OUTAGE.
The fact that nobody could get a hold of Putt is far more concerning. It means the place has no disaster recovery strategy. Fucking amateur hour.
As for the lot of you VOAT!
Stop freaking the fuck out. Welcome to the internet of the early 90's where shit broke. You want this place to run better, pay Putt so that he can quit his job and hire a newb backup person. We are apparently dependant on a shit app. You can propose alternative tech till the cows come home, but unless there is an actual person out there building it fuck off with the "Voat needs to ..." all of this requires money and man hours, unless you are going to put up the skills or cash shut the fuck up. It's like listening to people saying they have a great idea for a video game. You don't, your idea sucks, and I don't want to hear about it. No programmer does. Either put your skin in the game or SHUT UP.
DanyMcbrideAsHanSolo ago
Oh come on. Around here thats like a compliment.
Adminstrater ago
It's nice looking at things from a hindsight perspective.
DanyMcbrideAsHanSolo ago
I'll upvoat you Terd, you fucking prick.
TheBuddha ago
I'm not the one who complained about losing CCP. That was you, you drunken weirdo. Sober up. Don't lie and say you're sober. Deal with your alcoholism.
TheBuddha ago
Sober up. I'll talk to you again when you're sober.
TheBuddha ago
You did complain about not having CCP. Or did you get drunk and forget what you posted?
TheBuddha ago
See? I tried to help you. You complained and I told you how to fix it. Instead, you just keep going. The results won't change unless you change.
TimberWolfAlpha ago
Amen. I run an IRC server for a network and whenever there's a netsplit we're flooded by the panicked and uninformed, and I tell them, the notable thing isn't that our world-spanning network of servers temporarily lost a link, the notable thing is how long we go without losing it most of the time.

+2 for best mech -1 for furry
TimberWolfAlpha ago
Not a furry, just named for the mech.
TheBuddha ago
You'd probably get fewer downvotes if you stopped being retarded?
Just a suggestion, but it appears to be effective.
I don't even agree with most of voat, and I have more SCP and CCP than I know what to do with. I earn it by not being retarded. It's actually not difficult.
middle_path ago
To be fair, if Putt started charging, most of us would gladly pay monthly/yearly. But it's just not offered. He really hasn't been very transparent about finances lately.
Also, people make suggestions (that I've seen) in v/ideasforvoat/ which is the whole point of the sub.
boredTech ago
Not really. The reason why most pay services don't survive the web is because they haven't built enough of a user base first. Ours isn't large enough to introduce one yet. Donation services have also been shown to work better for finances. Putt just needs to put up some freaking instructions.
And is in an ok location. I block that shit. But, what ideas from there have actually been implemented? The site hasn't changed that much in years.
TheBuddha ago
Sort by oldest first, with the default being able to be set in your profile.
That was my idea, mentioned in that sub, that was implemented.
You're welcome.
boredTech ago
Not quite as complicated as traffic, but good idea to throw out.
TheBuddha ago
It's a damned good setting and I sort by oldest first (then threaded) on all forums where such is an option. That way, I see what was first written and can read things in chronological order.
Voat didn't have that option and didn't allow us to even set the default sort order until after I made said suggestion. It was accepted and implemented with remarkable speed, actually.
I sort pretty much everything like that, except email. Email gets sorted newest first. I'd probably sort it oldest first, but I'm actually pretty horrible about keeping my inbox clean.
So, I'm responsible for that feature and I proposed it by way of v/ideasforvoat - and it worked well and quickly. It was a brilliant idea and we can use it as a metric that suggests the other proposed ideas just aren't that good!
I'm pretty much a national treasure!
boredTech ago
HAHAHAHAHA! Sure.
I don't think anybody is capable of handling email. As far as conspiracies go I think that email was designed by cultists to propagate minor evil through the world in a large range. Kind of like
A joke of course.
TheBuddha ago
Hmm... We could probably get the conspiracytards to believe this.
boredTech ago
Easy enough. The whole anatomy of any good conspiracy is "X is keeping this from you, but I have discovered through research into Y that X has been doing horrible things to warp your mind. Wake up, blah blah blah." Then hold up some stuff they've never seen before, regardless if it's real or not, and watch as the idea has been implanted into their brain and they will balk any real info.
TheBuddha ago
It's the information they didn't want you to know!
Alas, I'm kind of lazy about such things and I'd have to use an alt. They'd never believe me. I make too many potato posts.
boredTech ago
I'm guilty of one or two of those in the past.
Trust me, it's not that hard. I put up one as being pure satire where I was talking about Nazi's taking over and living on the south pole for all of it's resources. Being the only race that can handle the climate blah blah blah. I wrangled one in on my first post and it was just a comment. People are too easy. Really didn't feel like following through though (bored, but exceptionally lazy).
TheBuddha ago
I got one going a while back, and found people repeating it, but I just didn't have the energy to follow it up and keep pushing it. I'm just too apathetic, I think.
boredTech ago
OMFG! 911 actually believes that gabara broke voat (or at least is spreading that like it's real). I still don't know if that one is a troll account, but it comes off as too stupid to not be real. Good going on that one.
TheBuddha ago
He's pretty easy to get going. I have him on ignore, not because I am bothered by him but because I know it's annoying for him to know that he's not being seen and not getting the attention he wants. This pleases me to no end, largely because I'm a five year old and easily amused.
middle_path ago
I'll concede on the point with donations. I can't imagine the amount of people who haven't donated because of how damn confusing it is for the layman.
It's irrelevant to my point. You were complaining about how people make too many suggestions. I was pointing out that there is a place dedicated just to that. It would be like complaining about garden posts in v/Justgrowit

Concern trolling has hit the front page. That's why I'm complaining. Fucking low energy shit.
