You're right, there are newer people but their behaviour isn't as suspicious. They probably will try to barrage the place with shitty reddit-type comments. Maybe they'll flood the place with bots. People saw the front page of reddit's aww is being copied here, so I wouldn't be surprised..
The ramp up of cute pictures is in response to a few people complaining about the animal posts. And surprise surprise. The complainers are mostly new accounts. What is going on?
