There is a bug or misconfiguration on anon subverses. Comments made by anon users are been counted in their public profile. This exciting opportunity makes it possible to unmask anon usernames, especially those shills and vampires when you have a list of their account names!! I feel very tempted to keep this info to myself, because this little bit of data could be very useful!

Some of the accounts that brought attention to this issue. It appears that they are most likely anon users, as well.

Test record that shows that comment deletion updates the comment counter under user's profile. So it is not the comment/cache bugs previously reported.

I don't think you understand it. What @NeedleStack posted back then was speculation without proof. I did went back to see the anon submission that was cited as proof. It did not make any sense; it was someone larping at best.

This report is about a bug that could affect anon users. I am getting the impression that you think this problem has always been there. But, no, it is a BUG that only occurred after recent update! I reported it as soon as it was found. And even if one were to exploit it, it would still take sophisticated tools to cross reference against a list of suspects. That is not something most people know how to do!

No, I don't think that we (at least for me) owe her any apology! It was a situation where she was confused but made the claim without tangible evidence and she refused to correct it or provide further proof. It was certainly her freedom to express however she wanted it.

I don't know if you block anon subverses. But I do regularly block them, as new ones are created. There is too much shit posting and larping and pinging into nonsense situations.

Would it be possible for you to provide a snapshot or two? And are you certain that the proof handed to you in private was legitimate and not a setup? If a user has multiple accounts, heck even with just one account, he can talk to himself and create a narrative within anon - and that is something quite common within anon subverses. It will appear as reasonable proof beyond doubt. You have to consider both sides...

I am pretty open-minded, if you can prove it beyond doubt/speculation, I would sincerely apologize. And if that is the case, I think many more users involved within that submission should also apologize. But you did not provide enough reasonable proof.

My personal opinion is that neither you nor Putt was at fault; you both stood your grounds. Someone else cooked up that terrible situation and you both did and reacted according to what you thought was the right thing to do.

Good find. Will fix. This is the underlying reason why we don't allow points in anon subs: too easy to identify users. It's also why we have fairly lengthy cache durations on user points.

If points could be earned from anon subverses, It would be very easy to unmask those names! For example, we could attack with vote-flipping technique:

  1. Create a small "army" of user accounts.
  2. Upvote a comment or a set of comments simultaneously using a set of accounts created in step 1.
  3. Watch the cache expired and record that data.
  4. Repeat the process with simultaneous downvotes.
  5. Unvote the comments previously flipped.
  6. Sort and cross reference that data.
  7. Once the data is processed, find a time frame where the targeted users are inactive (i.g. users not online).
  8. Repeat steps 1 to 7 to gradually refine and reaffirm your observation.

Anon is supposed to be a good way of discussing without revealing usernames. The magnitude of abuse in those subverses makes it quite unfriendly. Usually I just block them, as new ones are created.

That is easy to do. If you want to block me, for example, just go to my profile page (https://voat.co/u/MadWorld) and click on that block button right under my profile picture. It only collapses the comments of users on your blocklist and blocks those pings. :-) Hope you can make best use of both anon and regular subverses.

Another thing to note is that anons don't earn you any ccp/karma; so your commenting capacity may be limited, if your ccp is too low.

The key is that you have a list of suspects. Then you can cross reference their lingoes and timestamps. Yes it would be difficult, but could get easier gradually, if you collect enough data. But even if you could unmask the names, the shill accounts could always dispose and create new ones. While this is exciting to me, it probably has zero impact with shill problems on Voat.

Yeah the key is that you need a list of suspects to cross reference certain attributes over time. But even if one managed to unmask the name, the shills can always create new ones.
