I think part of the obsession came from Leviticus, which is basically a sanitary code. Circumcision to avoid infections, wash this and that to avoid infections, do this and that with meat to avoid infections, don't eat this and that to avoid infections. Religion is funny, some tend to take everything literally. We don't need circumcision anymore. We don't need to avoid shrimp or some animals or whatever, but it's written and religion says it's sacred.
