I.G. Farben in America: The Technologies of General Aniline and Film

ABSTRACT

The modern U.S. chemical industry emerged during World War I in response to shortages of essential organic chemicals previously available mainly from Germany. These chemicals were the coal-tar intermediates and their derived products, mainly dyestuffs and pharmaceuticals. This stimulated the development of technologies based on complex aromatic chemistry as well as the inauguration of sophisticated research programmes in industry. The outcome was an advanced science-based industry that embarked on diversification during the 1920s. However, access to German innovations was still needed, and the Germans wished to regain dye markets lost during the war. This led to a singularly important merging of American and German interests, the General Aniline Works, later known as General Aniline & Film. Under German ownership in the 1930s, a unique strategy for control of production and research was implemented at General Aniline. Under U.S. government ownership from 1942, General Aniline engaged in diversification based on pre-war German innovations made at I.G. Farben. The cessation of dyestuff manufacture in the 1970s at what had become the GAF Corporation represented a break with the past that was also taking place elsewhere in the United States. A half a century after its foundation the classical organic chemical industry had become an anachronism.

American IG owes its genesis to a German business conglomerate, namely, Interessens-Gemeinschaft Farbenindustrie AG, or IG Farben for short. The business, along with the industrial empire that “IG” controlled and commanded, has been described as “a state within a state.”

..In year 1928, the American holdings of IG Farben, namely, the American branches of Bayer Company, General Aniline Works, Agfa Ansco, and Winthrop Chemical Company,[1] were organized into a Swiss holding company, which was named Internationale Gesellschaft für Chemische Unternehmungen AG or IG Chemie, in short. The controlling interest of this entity rested with IG Farben in Germany. In the following year, 1929, just a decade before the outbreak of the Second World War, these American firms merged to become American IG Chemical Corporation, or American IG, later renamed General Aniline & Film (GAF).

..As a result of its 1966 acquisition of Sawyer's, General Aniline & Film (or GAF) went on to produce the View-Master, a children's toy, made today by Mattel's "Fisher-Price" division. GAF today still exists as GAF Materials Corporation, mainly as a manufacturer of asphalt and building materials.

GAF is a manufacturing company based in Parsippany, New Jersey,[1] that has roots dating back to the late 19th century. ..At one time GAF was also active in manufacturing photographic film[2] as well as cameras and projectors (both still and motion picture), and was the manufacturer of the View-Master, the famous line of 3D transparencies, viewers and projectors. Briefly in the 1970s, it was the official film of Disneyland and Walt Disney World, and at this time, actor Henry Fonda served as the company's spokesman in several television commercials including one that featured Jodie Foster in her first acting role.
