Ender's Game is a 1985 military science fiction novel by American author Orson Scott Card. Set at an unspecified date in Earth's future, the novel presents an imperiled humankind after two conflicts with the Formics, an insectoid alien species they dub the "buggers". In preparation for an anticipated third invasion, children, including the novel's protagonist, Andrew "Ender" Wiggin, are trained from a very young age by putting them through increasingly difficult games, including some in zero gravity, where Ender's tactical genius is revealed.

A great-great-grandson of Brigham Young, Card was born in Richland, Washington and grew up in Utah and California. While he was a student at Brigham Young University (BYU), his plays were performed on stage. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) in Brazil and headed a community theater for two summers.

However, when he was three years old, they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah so his father could finish his bachelor's degree. The family moved to Santa Clara, California when Card was six; they stayed there for seven years while his father completed his master's degree and was a professor at San Jose State College. .. The students are guided by a dittoed manual for each topic studied, while the teacher in the film, Mr. Willard Card moves about the classroom, giving assistance where it is needed.
