Catherine Lavinia Kellam, 93, wife of the late William Matthews Kellam, Sr. and a resident of Cheriton, VA, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at Heritage Hall Healthcare in Nassawadox, VA. A native of Exmore, VA, she was the daughter of the late Harry Rosser Kellam and the late Ida Lois Killmon Kellam. She was a member of Cheriton United Methodist Church, member and past Worthy Matron of Northampton Chapter #2 Order of the Eastern Star and will be remembered for the many weddings she catered and as author of a local cookbook, “Kitty Caters”.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara Kellam Latham and her husband, Roger, of Cape Charles, VA, Jane Kellam Belote and her husband, Harvey W., of Cape Charles; one son, William Matthews Kellam, Jr. and his wife, Tara, of Fayetteville, PA; six grandchildren, Katherine Latham Brown of Cheriton, Sara M. Latham of London, England, Paige Belote Addison and her husband, Hunt, of Cheriton, Benjamin M. Belote and his wife, Jennifer, of Mechanicsville, VA, Lauren Kellam Muskat and her husband, Steven, of Arlington, VA, Samuel M. Kellam of New York City, NY; six great grandchildren, Mary-Catherine Kellam Addison of Cheriton, Ethan M. Belote of Mechanicsville, Caroline H. Belote of Mechanicsville, Virginia B. Brown of Cheriton, Grayson L. Brown of Cheriton and Mason C. Muskat of Arlington.

The Order of the Eastern Star is a Masonic appendant body open to both men and women. It was established in 1850 by lawyer and educator Rob Morris, a noted Freemason, but was only adopted and approved as an appendant body of the Masonic Fraternity in 1873. The order is based on teachings from the Bible,[1] but is open to people of all religious beliefs. It has approximately 10,000 chapters in twenty countries and approximately 500,000 members under its General Grand Chapter.

Members of the Order of the Eastern Star are aged 18 and older; men must be Master Masons and women must have specific relationships with Masons. Originally, a woman would have to be the daughter, widow, wife, sister, or mother of a Master Mason, but the Order now allows other relatives[2] as well as allowing Job's Daughters, Rainbow Girls, Members of the Organization of Triangles (NY only) and members of the Constellation of Junior Stars (NY only) to become members when of age.

The emblem of the Order is a five-pointed star with the white ray of the star pointing downwards towards the manger. The letters FATAL surrounding the center pentagon in the emblem stands for "Fairest Among Thousands, Altogether Lovely," a reference to Song of Songs

The General Grand Chapter headquarters, the International Temple, is located in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C., in the Perry Belmont Mansion. The mansion was built in 1909 for the purpose of entertaining the guests of Perry Belmont. They included Britain's Prince of Wales in 1919. General Grand Chapter purchased the building in 1935. The secretary of General Grand Chapter lives there while serving his or her term of office. The mansion features works of art from around the world, most of which were given as gifts from various international Eastern Star chapters.

The Order of the Eastern Star must be researched. The women are especially active underground imo. They have totally flipped the Rainbow meaning. Some of the writings in the article are true but there are those that have taken these Orders to another stage. They have stretched the meanings and have evil-ized them as is their intention. It seems the Pentagram has evolved and means many things to many people and groups. this one is of Special Note:

The Satanic connection with the pentagram did not appear until 1966, when Anton LeVey founded the Church of Satan in San Francisco. To its adherents, the inverted pentagram’s upside-down three points are a parody of the Holy Trinity.

As we see many have taken it as their evil marker.

Hi my name is Janet Walker. I lived in the Washington D.C. area in 1998 and 1999 with my dad who had an office directly across from the Comet. Bring from a small town in western North Carolina I was rather sheltered from anything “city”. One day while visiting my dad at work he asked me to go across the street and get him a Reuben sandwich. First of all I had never even heard of a sandwich called a Reuben and so being an 18 year old smartass I assumed my dad was just mumbling some client’s name so I go to the Sunday on the corner and get my dad a steak and cheese sandwich. When I brought it back to my dad it was not well received at all. He asked me why I didn’t get him the sandwich he had asked for and again still had no idea what he was talking about. So finally after a few select curse words from my pops I figured I would take a chance and go ask the deli man for a Reuben sandwich. He went right to work building this mysterious structure of cornbeef on the with kraut and some weired pink sauce. I took it back to my dad to try and redeem myself and to my relief it worked. I had to know what all the fuss was about So after I built up the courage I asked for a bite. I was hooked instantly and then it all came together. It was like nothing I had ever had before in all my 18 years living in NC. I’m 37 now and never had I had a Reuben sandwich that was even close to the quality of the Comet’s. I moved back to NC in 1999 and havnt been back since. Today while planning a trip to D.C. with my husband I told him the mystery of the Reuben sandwich, I was highly disappointed when I read that the Comet had closed in 2005. I felt compelled to share my experience in hopes it would find its way to the former owner’s family so they could add it to their collection. Because of the Comet, I will always have a story to tell my kids, etc about a sandwich that brought my dad and I closer in a neighborhood that I will always remember as a home away from home.
