I wouldn't mind a extremely trimmed down version of this site. There are a few websites that have forums/communities and they run on $100 servers. I don't know how many people use Voat.. Ahh man. I am broken on the inside.

Would anyone be able to host the server from home? I could donate some old hardware........

/cry

I have an old i7-920 rig with an SSD, 1TB hdd, 16GB RAM, and two SLied 550ti's that I can be used. Not much I know, but that's all I've got!

Yeah, that is pretty much what I have laying around too.

I would throw in my newer FX-9590, R9 280X build in, but I need that for my college classes and currently not in usable condition. I must do more to keep Voat alive...

We would need server hardware. Hardware that's designed to be reliable, and run 24/7 at load without dying. You'd be suprised how cheap some of that stuff gets on ebay. Power efficieny is also important, as electricity is one of the larger costs of hosting. Not only do you have to pay for the power you use, you ALSO have to pay AGAIN for the power to run an ac unit to dissipate the resulting heat. Sure, the costs are paid indirectly through hosting fees, but they are still there. Pretty sure electricity still plays into the pricing of most colocation plans, too.

I understand how large scale and small scale servers work. I am a PC tech.
