Now, that's not as much money as it would be today, at that time bitcoin was worth over $2300 a piece. So, that’s still over 32 million dollars. They could have funded the next 10 years of voat for $780,000, if they are really paying over 6k a month, and not even put a dent in that.

I'm not sure about that bitcoin balance. I remember checking it a few times back then and it never had more than a single digit balance.
But aside from that, this post is spot on. It was obvious that voat was receiving funding when @puttitout suddenly stopped begging for donations. Shortly after voat chat was shut down and Putt falsely blamed it on Sanegoat, the site went down for a code update. After that, the bitcoin wallet address was missing from the homepage for weeks. It stayed that way until it was mentioned in a discord chat run by MYG, aka @freshmeat. Then, less than a day later, it was back up.
