IIRC, Voat's code is some kind of .NET C# nonsense. I probably would have gotten into playing around with the code, but .NET is on par with "Don't stick your dick in crazy". So, don't bother porting it to Linux unless that port is a complete rewrite in a sensible language.
There is plent of prebuilt forum software that is open source. It can be modified to look like voat and will have faster turnaround than a port will in most cases (and be cheaper). Performance ratings are the issue. I am not sure which of then have the best performance and it would need to he tested.
I wonder if reddit wants to help. We've seen them send suggestions to people that they should go to voat instead. We're all going to be over there causing trouble if voat fails. They may be able to lend a db guy to help cut costs. We are a problem for them.
If anything you do has value for an enemy make sure they pay a share to limit their benefit. They could honestly give a few devs for a few days and have us sorted out.
I'd love tocontribute, but I'm not getting into Slack. They had a major breach, a couple of months ago, and I'm not giving them more information to just pass around.
While I love Voat and it is the only social media site I use, I always took issue with the code being in .Net. It's not that efficient and expensive to host. For sure .Net has quite a lot of nice things as well, not trying to start a language war but using .Net was always going to be costly. Another issue is porting the code to Core so it runs on Linux is deeply tedious and uninteresting, it's not the type of project hobby developers like; the developers with the skill to do so would feel like they were at work and the hobby guys really lack the experience.
He even said that he's open to doing it himself but that it would take months. I'm hoping with a shotgun approach somebody finds the easy way to do it.
I am not sure if this is helpful, I appreciate that theres been lots of offers for support and I am not sure if/how I can contribute. I have very limited experience on larger projects. But as a thought why not just abandon the existing DB and start fresh? The people make voat and people can make new posts leaving dev time on the platform only. Why not offer putt a plan C, a viable platform for a new voat.
I costed this up in another thread at circa 80-100k needed to get this over and keep it alive in the mean time, leaving an investor as the only credible option. 75% of the cost was dev time porting the code.
I think the majority of the community would be happy with voat alive and would get over lost posts, we can backup the data and repost if needed. This might just be a case of not throwing the baby out with the bathwater. We would all be willing to sacrifice a lot just to keep this bastion of free speech going.
Perhaps this is a more practical approach when looking at offering a solution externally and not just landing putt with more work.
Maybe I could. But I'm rarely motivated to do more of the same as I did all day. Also don't have expertise in the exact tech Voat uses, but similar ones. If there's a nice way to setup a development environment and to populate a database with good testing data, I might look at some bugs.
The context of this thread and the one linked in the OP is that Voat is in serious danger of shutting down as stated here: https://voat.co/v/announcements/1866053
Also I mistakenly linked to a comment in that submission, when I meant to link to just the submission. Sorry @Voatsearch for any extra attention your comment gets.
Hey, no worries. I'm still hoping for a key figure who can pull all this together as project manager, but it is starting to sound as if Putts isn't interested in this idea anyway... which is a bit Disappointing (so to speak).
Well let's give it a day or so for him to process whats going on. I think yesterday he was ready to throw in the towel but he may see things differently if some idea grabs him and some money flows in.

Once the work is done we can probably host it ourselves if Putt goes AWOL. Hosting linux is cheap.

It's written in C#, yeah? Try just running it on mono.
This is why writing stuff in proprietary languages bites you in the ass eventually.
Disappointed ago
I read the github blurb and basically this site started out as a way for Atko to learn C#. He never expected it to blow up the way it did.
Atarian ago
I daresay.
It's still written in an inappropriate language.

It might be simpler and faster just to rewrite it from scratch.

Thanks.
@Donbuster maybe link this thread into yours there because there's some good responses here.

I have the skills and I like voat but its a for profit business not a charity. I don't believe in donating to corporations.

How did you get a picture of me coding?

He mentioned in the post yesterday that it would take close to 3 months, and he didnt have the money to pay for it to be done.

I remember seeing him say he would go for it but without funding it would be for nothing. Check out his latest comments for his exact words.

There are some people against it in the replies but it's not my field(by a long shot) so I don't know what to make of it.

You're best off copy/pasting this reply in the thread I linked. I'm just helping them out by linking to it and they might not see this here.

Any idea where their core code is (github/gitlab/svn/etc)? I thought I read somewhere it's all .Net?

There's an edit in the OP of that thread showing where Voat's recent code is. https://github.com/voat/voat/tree/Dev

Thanks, I'll take a look tonight.

Sorry mod. I may use Linux and know how to script, but as for actual programming. No fucking clue. :(
We've gotta have someone though.
