You keep increasing its velocity until it's kinetic energy is enough to overcome the bond energy of the border region around the impact area. Once you know that it's possible in theory it's just a case of putting real values into the equation to find out if it will happen in a particular situation or not.

By the time the weak ass plastic and aluminum wings would have gotten to the hardened steel, the object would have been going too slow for the wings to penetrate, evwn more so for the tail section.
