is this why modular phones died out? cause you could literally remove the camera, and other peices, as needed. Including GPS.

aka Phoneblocks.

Apexbreed ago

I never even knew about these. Guarantee the gov paid the producer off to stop the production. Translated to "we would like you invest in your company, but under some specific rules."

GoodGodKirk ago

One came out, but it was hardly modular, and then there was google AVA, which was disbanded a few years ago. Claims that the device easily fell apart, but I think this is more the reason.

I'd recommend the Blackphone Line by Silent Circle. The first version can be found rather cheap on eBay. Here's a link to their most recent release: https://www.styxblackphone.com/privy-phone

If they want you, they will get you.

Set up a kill zone. Say crazy shit near phone. Cheka comes to kill zone. Dies. Did not burn in gulag. Sozenetzien happy

My idea is to just use Huawei phones. Maybe it's better to be spied on by the Chinese then by the NSA, as long as you're never planning on visiting China.

Apexbreed ago

I agree with your line of thinking here. Chinks are only interested in spying on average Joe's for financial reasons. They aren't trying to falsify a federal case against you.

By the ssme logic, choose Kasperski security software.

albatrosv15 ago

First you use other peoples wifi, then you use 12 proxies(not less, not more!), then route it through tor, then you use your credit card to buy yourself a nice vpn, cause you are then totally safe.

Don't have one.

Every modern cell phone sold in the US has its radio chip connected to the actual processing hardware at the lowest level. This means that the radio chip can override the actual processor of the phone if need be. Smarter people than me have gone on about this at length, but tl;dr modern smart phones are entirely 0wn3d by NSA and friends. Not trying to black pill, only alternative I know of is Librem 5 phone which isn't out yet.

Do some research, don't trust your phone, period.

Apexbreed ago

I have a lot of research to do, but at this point, I'm ready to go back to a dumb phone...

dawnbandit1 ago

Librem 5 looks like it's using 5+ YO hardware. It also has no support for the newer Band 71 (600MHz) spectrum.

gonight ago

Yeah, but that's still more functions than a flip phone, if you want that kind of stuff.

Derpfroot ago

Use a VPN to bypass the ISP, tor to bypass client server spying and the only way for the camera is to cover it up. But no matter what you try, if they want it bad enough (as in, you're a direct target), then they will have what amounts to a clone of your phone within a day. Security, especially with Internet stuff is a joke. Mainly because it was built to be open (everyone's allowed access) but then started to do what they could to lock down certain areas, which is a bad way to do security stuff.

I have a novel idea. Just don't own a fucking smart phone.

goforkyourself ago

This is the best option.

There are other options that people don't know about as well - https://puri.sm/products/librem-5/ - Hardware switches, open OS, etc. The only "bad" things that I've seen is that it's not "modern" hardware and that it'll be "slow". If you want a corvette, you don't go to a startup that's trying to create a kit car. My next phone and laptop will probably be from Purism as they have gotten passed their initial run of laptops and survived.

Apexbreed ago

Even dumb phones have cameras.

jnola2 ago

I'll elaborate a bit, then. I don't have a cell phone; smart, dumb, or whatever.

Apexbreed ago

This might be the safest play. Then my question shifts to computer cams. Meaning a desktop with no microphone or camera tech connected in any way, is even safer.

jnola2 ago

For desktop/laptop computers, I go into device manager and disable the camera, microphone, and blue tooth hardware. It also doesn't hurt to cover up the camera with electric tape or something opaque.

Apexbreed ago

Good advice. Also, Band-Aids work great to cover laptop cams, since they can be removed and attached plenty of times before losing stickiness. Assuming you need the cam ever...

Put a nail through it.

Drilled out and filled with epoxy is the security standard in certain industries.

TheBuddha ago

It won't help. They'll use 5G to spy on OP's thoughts!

22trilionAsecond ago

WiFi can already do gesture tracking.

belrial ago

Keep the cameras covered.
