Authorities say that two black teenagers lured a White pizza delivery man to a vacant home to rob him — but their plan went awry and resulted in the deaths of two people, including one of the teens. Now the other teen has been charged with murder.
Joshua Ungersma, 37, was making a Domino's Pizza delivery late on the night of Aug. 31 when he was approached by 19-year-old Alberto Vanmeter, who is black, in a robbery attempt.
According to the prosecutors' probable cause affidavit obtained by the Lafayette Journal and Courier, Ungersma pulled out a firearm and shot Vanmeter. A neighbor heard the shots and asked if Ungersma was okay. He instructed the neighbor to call 911.
According to the probable cause affidavit, while the neighbor was calling 911, Vanmeter's alleged accomplice, 17-year-old Jaelynn Billups, also black, approached Ungersma and shot him several times at point blank range. The coroner determined that Ungersma died of multiple gunshot wounds while Vanmeter died of a single gunshot wound.
Billups has been arrested and charged with two counts of murder: one in connection with the shooting of Ungersma, and another in connection with the death of Vanmeter.
Under Indiana state law, Billups can be charged with Vanmeter's death, even though she did not pull the trigger, because she was allegedly committing a felony that resulted in Vanmeter's death.
Billups has also been charged with armed robbery, one count of theft, one count of pointing a firearm and one count of carrying a handgun without a license.
Prosecutors allege that Billups was the one who ordered the pizza for delivery and had it sent to an unoccupied dwelling. For that, she was charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery.
