From what I understand, he's a man in a position very close to the President, with access to all kinds of information that would literally melt your fucking soul if you heard.
He drip feeds it onto the internet like morphine, making a vaguely worded prediction or statement that his dedicated followers immediately set to work tearing apart. They take a 5 word sentence of his, and look at it from every possible angle you could imagine, desperately trying to squeeze the real meaning out of it.
Early on, it was a rather convincing hoax. As time passes, it's become clear that this "Q" individual is a liar. It's likely not an individual, but many people working on a carefully tailored operation.
It appears to be directed at the group of Americans that would be most dangerous to a tyrannical government- "middle Americans". The early-middle aged, "middle class", heavily armed, fanatically patriotic, Christian, and hard-working types. The amount of time these folks pour into decoding Q's nonsense that could be devoted to... making more White babies or something like that, it's obscene.
The funniest thing of all is when they blatantly change the wording of things that were said, and then try to decode it. Like that "10 days of darkness" shit.

I've never really followed what Q is supposed to be, and I think I'm okay with that.
