From November 16 through November 18 the President of the Humpty Dumpty Institute, Ralph L. Cwerman, accompanied the Permanent Representative of Romania, Ambassador Simona Miculescu, to Virginia State University in Petersburg, Virginia. As part of HDI’s Higher Education Alliance (HEA) program, Virginia State University, an Historically Black College University, and a member of Thurgood Marshall College Fund, convened a special forum on the topic of “Human Trafficking a Global Dilemma” to coincide with international week for 2011.

The program started on Thursday morning, November 17, with an address by Ambassador Miculescu to joint classes. The Ambassador, current Chairman of the 4th Committee in the 66th Session of the General Assembly spoke to the students about her position as Ambassador to the United Nations and tried to give the students a personal perspective on the challenges and rewards in being an ambassador during fundamental change in the international landscape. Following the lecture, student ambassadors of Virginia State led Ambassador Miculescu and Mr. Cwerman on a campus tour followed by a working lunch with VSU President, Keith Miller and Provost W. Weldon Hill along with a number of leading faculty members.

The next morning Mr. Cwerman moderated a panel on Human Trafficking composed of Ambassador Miculescu and Sarah Pomeroy, Head of the Richmond Justice Initiative, and Dr. Nana Derby, Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at Virginia State University (VSU), to an overflowing crowd of students and faculty again, addressing the view of modern day slavery in the form of human trafficking.

Finally, Ralph Cwerman, is president and chief executive

officer, co-founder and board member of the Humpty Dumpty Institute, HDI, a private non-governmental organization dedicated to enhancing ties between the U.S. Congress and the United Nations. Under Mr. Cwerman's leadership, the institute has brought hundreds of Members of Congress and their senior staff to U.N. headquarters, including myself, for private briefings. Previously, Mr. Cwerman served as senior vice president of MUUS Asset Management Company, LLC, and senior vice president of the United Nations Association of the United States. Prior to that, Mr. Cwerman served as director of research and speechwriter to Ambassador Benjamin Netanyahu at Israel's permanent mission to the United Nations. He holds a bachelor's degree in Middle East studies from Tel Aviv University and a master's degree in international

affairs from Columbia University.
