Ok, I keep thinking about the $6k figure that @Puttitout mentioned in his thread.
For some reason I'm not seeing the costs here.
1. Bandwidth
2. Hosting
3. Cloud flare
4. Dev time costs
5. Legal ???
But we don't know because he didn't come out and say what it is in reality.
So let's say that we have enough people here who could help with programming. Depends on the language.
We have people who could help with server management.
Those who can't or are afraid of don't can and are probably willing to click a few ads per day.
Member management can also be done by a committee but ... Umm ... Yeah ... I get it. The point is that we can source this too.
But !!! I'm gonna say that he wants out of his day job and make this go big like Reddit. We are that close.
So, let's be a bit pragmatic here ...
Nobody likes .net so we go to another language maybe one that has the most goats able to work in; screw the ideological argument of what language is best -- just get the most guns on board.
Once the language is chosen, decide if a framework fit our needs.
Then we move to project manages who lay out a time line and just keep an eye out for areas that aren't staying on track.
I don't see why voat can't be converted to another language within weeks. I do laravel work and could probably have the majority in place within a month if I didn't have to go to work. The database structure is set, the core functions are all there so it's just rewriting those functions in the new target language. Some parts tend to JavaScript / node really well and others need a back end for api endpoints.
Once could starts getting submitted we get the DB guys to evaluate queries. And we get the security guys to hammer the could for all possible entry vectors.
How many people are we technically looking at? Max 20, more likely 10.
The biggest issue is starting paralysis and arguing about what language to use. The project managers can focus on functionality and ranking them in order which helps the coders to stay on target.
Once a beta is in place, we start looking at the marketing group to push for advertisements and social media spamming to pull in more people to the site. Ads can work and I think many of us can live with that ... Maybe have a on going outside link to an Amazon affliate that we go to before shopping at amazon. This could and probably should be a separate site with no voat branding to keep it low key.
Finding a hosting company can't be that hard and I can't see why a $250/month machine run everything. Bandwidth and content legality is the big problem.
I have no idea about cloudflare but I'm sure somebody here knows about this and we try to keep those costs down and still stay secure.
Writing all that out it makes me wonder why the community hasn't been called upon unless it's a business thing which is cool by me because all the work put into this site does deserve some kind of payout.
What do you all think?

"a business is like jumping out of an airplane without a parachute. In mid air, the entrepreneur begins building a parachute and hopes it opens before hitting the ground.” – Robert Kiyosaki
Most people are not business people, thus they do not know how to build the parachute, even though they have the plane.
WhiteRonin ago
Cash flow quadrant :-) live by that code!
Still think good ol'Roberto is but of con artist but he did have those 2 good books which alone make him ok by me!
AnmanIndustries ago
Every time you buy something you don't need or will stop enjoying after a few days, you have been conned. He made money and he did it well. Rich Dad is a great book and I always give it to young people as a starting point. Using those principles he just made more money. He is a BEST SELLING AUTHOR, not just an AUTHOR after all. Which is what is happening here.
WhiteRonin ago
Lol, I've always loved that comment.
Other books: Napoleon Hill -- think and grow rich, Dale Carnegie -- how to influence people and make friends and what was that other one ... something master mind something something maybe it was another Hill book ...
I also do recommend the Art of War by Sun Tsu for certain understandings.
AnmanIndustries ago
Yeah, it's one of my favourites from the book.
[cough]
https://voat.co/v/businessforpeople/1092685
Youre thinking of "Think and grow rich" I believe. Which was mostly Carnegie.
Gone over the Art of war many times. You're not looking at a beginner here. But I am not up there just yet either.
WhiteRonin ago
Lol, that is the book. Chapters 10 and 11 (master mind and sexmutation) really stood out for me.
another lol, for probably having read the same books about the same number of times ;-)
AnmanIndustries ago
Master mind stuck with me. I have tried to find my own mastermind, but in the end I couldnt find anything that truly sat within my own values. So I started my own, but all that happened was that it turned into a business partnership sort of thing with people that I liked. Not very big, is intimate, but I still feel like that its not really a group of people I can freely bounce my ideas around. The sexmutation thing bothered me a little. In some ways I can see how it is relevant and almost applicable, but if you are using your hormones and natural biology to push forward, you will suffer when those things are no longer prevalent. I do not expect my empire to take off until I am 45 or 50. I will peak at 60 and ready to hand over at 70. While my wife is smoking hot and I am a great example of a man, those driving forces will decrease over time.
From those books I branched out into practical knowledge. Mostly in business management and market trading. The thirst for knowledge from them killed off my desire to read fiction, but I am not saddened by this. Always improving myself, being better. Sounds like we could be friends, if this wasnt the internet.
WhiteRonin ago
Or if the stars in your area weren't in the wrong locations! Southern Cross ... hmmm ... I've got Orion in the winter! ;-)
I totally stopped reading fiction ... netflix is my only binge for that. I built a carpc because I had too many audio books that I wanted to listen to. I used to have a huge library of various business to self help topics on hand all the time.
The master mind doesn't have to be local. it's just having a group of people to through ideas at which is important. Wifey is still too young to really trust me and thinks she doesn't need my advice ... lol ... kids ;-)
I get the sexmutation part because if you don't have a steady stream (even if it's blocked off at home) your mind will wander and consider who to get "some" instead of focusing on money / business matters. Or at least that was my take on it. It's been about 6-7 years since I read that book.
AnmanIndustries ago
Master of Orion 2 was a great game. Honestly location is irrelevant. The internet is just shit and full of people made of it. Im a bit like that too. No time for uselessness makes you a bit of an arsehole.
USB sticks full of books and music. I just rotate the books when I've heard them in the car. I also can plug in aux plugs into my cars so I can just use my phone or tablet or whatever I want. Audiobooks are great.
"Wifey is still too young to really trust me and thinks she doesn't need my advice" This raises a lot of questions. But I feel a bit sorry for you. My wife is my business partner and in many ways she is more ruthless than me. She is very Machiavelli Prince though and lacks some finer points in this regards.
Well, that is what a wife is supposed to be for. Its been a while since I read it too, but I was under the impression that you were to take that 'energy" and direct it to money / business matters. Eh. Whatever.
WhiteRonin ago
I was just cracking a joke about the location.
I need to get a usb stick together again. I've just been to busy and a little to lazy to do it. I've been listening to talk show radio and been trying to catch up on American culture that I have missed out on for over 20 years.
Oh wifey isn't stupid and she for example just knows that a business takes at least 3 years to be profitable ... I have no clue where she learned that it wasn't at her school for sure. It's more like she hasn't had age to give her wisdom yet. I'm way older than her. She is like your wife though is very crude and rude when it comes to making money decisions outside of shopping for shoes! lol You guys seem to have it together which is awesome!
As for the sexmutation, I'm pretty sure it was more about being focused on other things just chasing tail and trim which is the lost energy part rather than the actual "energy" part of it. I could be wrong though, too.
AnmanIndustries ago
JOKES ARE FOR THE FEEBLE....Or something.
American culture.... Sounds.... ,.. Great.... Yeah.. Do you honestly think its important to catch up? Its mostly manufactured really.
Old american, goes to asia, gets a young wife, she likes to buy shoes. It sounds like some sort of movie but I cant quite figure out which. Im sure youve seen this before:
http://www.geekinheels.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/average_asian_woman_aging.jpg
My wife is not the shopping shop kind of woman. I think being quite tall she has had that bred out of her, being that pretty much no shops stock clothes her size without her being able to fit inside of it 3-4 times over.
You know, we could just look it up again. But I can't be bothered. Im just shit talking with you and doing some reports.
WhiteRonin ago
No, American culture isn't worth it these days. I'm just missing out on lots of work chat though.
LMFAO! That is soooooooo true! I've seen that too much that it hurts!
You got a tall wife too? Wifey is tall in Japan and is taller than most guys over there being 170. She has the opposite problem now over here. All the clothes are made from the XXXXXXXL crowd and finding small or medium stuff is actually hard now.
Actually, I just graduated uni when I went over and had a blast. So much so that I never really had a reality check until about 4-5 years ago when I realized it was time to start a real career.
AnmanIndustries ago
I reckon I will end up living in Japan at some stage so I've started to think that my children will probably end up with asian partners. I am 6'5" and my wife is 6'2". And yeah... XXXXXXXL every where. Not only does it have to be small, it has to be long. Not easy for her.
Better late than never. A number of authors have said that in regards to the momentum of money. I often think I wasted so much of my life by not getting into this mind set earlier, but really I would have only gained 6-7 years at most. And if you dont mind me asking, what career would yours be?
WhiteRonin ago
I taught English in Japan ... But now sling quick and dirty php code. I'd rather do more heavy based framework coding though.
You are ahead of me ... I'm still trying to catch up to where you are at. I don't regret goofing off though. At least you are on track now.
I'm 6' (183cm) so we are both shorter than y'all. The comment about clothes sizes was in reference to natives here who are prime targets for fph.
AnmanIndustries ago
Why did you go back to the US? Wouldnt staying in Japan been better? Good old PHP. My favourite code. Built little scripts to do stuff in notepad on the fly. I learned it by building browser games in it. Some people tell me I should still do it, but its not profitable these days and would be a full time job. I'd give you a project once I'm done establishing my current businesses. Might as well give browser games a stab again. I already have the plan for a profitable one. Probably be worthless by the time it comes to design.
Yeah, sure. Im ahead of you. maybe half a head. How big is the average persons head? Load of shit those sort of words. If I was really ahead I would have hired you to make that game for me already.
Yeah, we are only a step and half behind america in everything here. I love FPH. I came along with them from reddit, along with my wife. She loves it more than me. Im not a part of the community, I just saw the signs of lack of freedom.
WhiteRonin ago
Japan is a place to live not work. Career advancement is crap and age based so you really can't shine unless you have your own business as a white guy. Then you hit other blocks because you are a white guy. It's also a place to be in your 20's ;-)
My wife is a total shitlord worse than me. I stay away from fph because it made even worse and where I live it's 97% of the population. I could be a monk here because I just don't like jellyrolls.
I bet we would have a hilarious weekend if we got together. Forget sleep we be too pumped just talking shit of all kinds!
Ah, I see what you are saying about sleep. I don't have insomnia but never feel rested so I do micro naps throughout the day. Never thought a out it much thought, just a fact of life.
AnmanIndustries ago
Well, jokes on you. Im eastern european. Im sure im slightly darker than the average japanesian (totally made that word up right now). My wife is wife as hell though. But we are also twice the size of the average japanesian. Maybe we could go on TV shows. I actually already suspected as much in regards to work. I do not like their corporate business culture. Falling asleep being a sign of a hard worker. What a load of shit. I dont think age would matter much. I was never really interested in the cities.
The plague of fat is a market of the end of a civilisation. Be weary. There are a LOT of those markers currently active.
Yeah. Pumped. You want me to have a heart attack? Part of not sleeping (and as I havent told you yet, not breathing), is that you wake up more tired than when you went to bed. Im on the edge of breakthrough medically though. Im on a diet that consists of practically nothing. Showing sign of progress. Maybe after that point we can blow up some kangaroos down here and eat the remains. Very tasty.
I take a 20-30 minute nap every week day. Gotta or I tire real fast. Its pretty shit. I could go over years worth of health research i've done, something might help you. But it would take forever.
WhiteRonin ago
I'm born American but have pure European blood. Both parents are immigrants. I ended up looking like a Hitler youth ... Lol.
With what you did with your property would work up in Hokkaido and yes you could run a b&b and probably end up in the eventually. A Belgium? Dude got on TV for his organic tomatoes .... Lol, he grows other organics too ;-)
Sleep apnea? I probably have that and have freaked out lots of girls apparently ... I'm pretty good a catching a wink at traffic lights ... Totally crazy and scary. I've got tinnitis too yet very healthy otherwise ... Oh well. I don't really tire but it could be a personality thingy. I've got my own office now so I do nap everyday for 10-15 after lunch. (Maybe more????)
I'm up for roo jerky!
AnmanIndustries ago
Aha! I knew it! You were a nazi. My grandfather always tells me about the time when the war started and all the germans were called back to germany. They were constructing a bridge at the time on the Yugoslavian border and then turned around to him and his guys and said "fuck you and tito". They jumped into the river and swam back to the other side and off they went. Im sure they were ok and won the war.
I was thinking more of going around and scaring people. My wife wants to get a shirt that says "Im big in japan" and wants us to sneak up on people doing godzilla poses. She will probably get us killed.
Chronic sinusitis, rhinitis and all the fatigues that go along with high blood pressure. Its difficult, but it helps to build up a lack of tolerance for useless people. Sleeping at the wheel. That may be a very bad thing. Im sure you are aware of that.
We've made mutton jerky. We have the means to make a number of things. Were fancy. (owning a good business has some perks too) Wife wants to jerky roo, but havent had any come up.
WhiteRonin ago
That sounds almost like my grandparents on my mother side.
Gdad built the bridges and Gmom's family was happy to blow them up. Apparently they enjoyed dinner, the good talk and went back to work the next day but made sure the opposite of the family wasn't in the area when the blew up more bridges. So, yeah, I'm probably one of the few on here who does have claims to be being a nazi ... lol and ugh ...
You guys would fit right in with Japan. Not get you killed but filmed a lot ;-)
AnmanIndustries ago
Honestly, nothing wrong with being a nazi. It was either that, or risk being shot on trying to skip the country. That being said, my grandfather did fight against them with the russians, so I guess were enemies now?
I think japanese famous would make me happy. I actually really hate the spot light and being around people, but really, deep down, the japanese are not people.
WhiteRonin ago
A Nazi ... Lol ...I'm only half. The other half is Danish with ties to swedish royalty. Maybe grandad shot my uncle -- I guess that makes us even??!?!
They grow on you ;-) and the sheer amount of bull shit is extremely refreshing!
AnmanIndustries ago
In whole numbers, 0.5 nazi counts as 1 nazi.
You are seriously making me feel anticipation for going to japan. I really can not afford do to so right now, even for a week. I guess I will just sign up to some competitions and hope I grab one, but I will still be doing a lot of work remotely.
WhiteRonin ago
:-p
Need to have a drink over that ;-)
What to do in Japan.
Winter: Sapporo during the snow festival. Slopes are 20-60 minutes away. Prime snow is 3 hours.
Summer:
Sapporo : yosakoi festival
Kyoto: gion festival
Akita: nebuta festival
These periods are peak tourist season but going to Japan and not seeing a festival is highly retarded!
Gion was just fucking nuts. 2 million people crushed in small streets. You both are all so major good views. I was able to move with having my feet on the ground ...
Like Korea, you have to do a Japanese BBQ. Happiness and with beer in a beer garden ... Love love :-)
Japanese castles are awesome so the Osaka Kyoto area is prime! Himeji (the white crane castle) is drivable and the other direction is wakayama castle and the ninja house in Iga. Hattori Hanzo !!
I really miss the festivals ... They are the ultimate right of summer in Japan and it's just lots of fun ... Even little shit towns with just a few shops were always a reason for me to pull over and but expensive food that even not really good tasted great because it's a festival! At one of the local shit hole festivals I lucked out and actually saw a monkey show.
One thing that most people don't mention is New Year's Eve. I would rank it easily with NYC count down in times square but better is waiting for a major shrine to open it's gates at midnight and flowing in with the crowds ... Everybody is basically wasted and Drunk and inside is a festival setup. By a few charms and drink hot sweet sake and drive home :-) yep, major drunks out at night and cops give a shit.
I did get plastered at the beer festival at the Sapporo beer factory and drove home ... Cops made sure we could get on the roads ... Lol. I lived 10 minutes away so ... I was like fuck it! Like every other participants that day :-) hick hick.
I don't drink normally but a beer garden or beer factory festival is more than enough incentive to act like a fool and call your boss and coworkers faggetz and assholes. The next day is always great for laughs because all that stress was let out and remembering who did stopid shit is just part of the day.
AnmanIndustries ago
Thanks for that, you douche bag. Now i definitely do not want to go to Japan. huuuurr.
We actually already decided to go completely off tourist season. Sure I'll probably miss out on most of the festivals and stuff, but we really are introverts so they are not that important to us. Even if they are all full of japanese people.
Sorry to say, I do not drink beer. I've never even been drunk. Tipsy, not drunk. I'm currently not drinking any alcohol due to health reasons.
WhiteRonin ago
Fine, we'll some dingo piss or what ever you drink instead ;-)
Actually, me and wifey hate chatting with people and so we can understand, yet, trust me, the festivals are perfect because people ignore you even more.
Today at Starbucks I had to talk to half the staff ... I'd rather b in Japan where it's a simple thanks on both sides and zero small talk unless you are trying to hit up on them.
AnmanIndustries ago
You know I've never seen a wild dingo. I dont think I've even seen one in a zoo.
I really do want to go there. I need to kick up my japanese lessons. I've gotten a bit slack as I've been changing between 3 cars on a regular basis and they all have different mediums for audio books. I need about 15k (aud) clean before I can even consider saving up money for the trip.
WhiteRonin ago
The lessons would help but hey -- who cares :-)
That's a proper plan! I need to buckle down and start saving money too.
AnmanIndustries ago
I want to be able to make the most of my visit by being able to communicate.
Im not really saving money per se, I need have obligations that need to be completed first, then it should free up some money. So, whats your plan for saving then?
WhiteRonin ago
Ah, makes sense.
Get wifey working ;-) I'll save some cash for sure by doing that!
AnmanIndustries ago
Get her to teach japanese.
WhiteRonin ago
Not enough a crowd here ... I can teach beginners :-)
I also thought she could do Japanese lessons on videos like on those learning sites. Easy money to be made for a course ...
Speaking of which ... You could do the same but more as a prepper thing. Charge $30 and I'm sure people would buy a 10 hour course from you!
AnmanIndustries ago
She can do it online, except instead of videos or learning sites, shes a tutor. Some people would like that more.
I have other projects that are taking up my time, for the purposes of making money.
WhiteRonin ago
You know ... I feel completely stupid right now ... Jesus fuck ... You are right. In a worst case situation she could be a conversation tutor. I totally forgot about this avenue. Thanks !
Always good to have projects that can turn I to cash :-)
AnmanIndustries ago
How is that a worst case situation? Tutoring is only good for small time income. Unless you start to take classes. One of my friends does maths tutoring and he used to do 1-3 at once.
Well.... all my projects in my life are for the pursuit of cash. It is what I have dedicated myself to for my various life goals.
WhiteRonin ago
I got nicknamed c-money by a buddy once because that's all I'd talk about (and picking up birds because I was single) he couldn't stand it ... Lol
Wifey is wanting to open an online shop ... I keep telling her she needs to throw shit at the wall and see what sticks and ten use that money to fund bigger things .... She did say girls in Sydney we're fit and had big boobs ... Lol!
AnmanIndustries ago
Could he sit on it? (har har har) I pick up birds all the time! I usually put them back in their cages though. I got the nick name space jew. Because when I play space empire games with people I always end up holding up the economy of all my allies because I micromanage the income of my empire.
What sort of online shop? And what does boobs have to do with any of this? Does she want to open a slave trade for sydeny girls? If you can figure out a way to get them out of this country I will help you. Even for minimum wage.
WhiteRonin ago
A space Jew and c-money ... Lol!
Lots of birds sat on him. Handsome black English guy. We made a great team! The girls had a choice between black and white and they normally split like that too.
She was thinking jewelry or something like that. However, I bet we could get lots of j-guys would love to have blond waifu's. Hmm, getting them out might be tough ... Wouldn't it???
AnmanIndustries ago
So you cut all the women in half and shared? How nice of you.
..... Is she actually blonde? Or did she dye her hair? Did you find an actual blonde japanese woman? HOW MUCH WILL YOU SELL HER FOR!?
Selling your looks can be quite lucrative. My wife plays that card a lot. She also feigns womanly weakness when she wants to get something in particular. She comes home and always tells me how pathetic people are. I love it.
