Post-WW2 pretty much every non-US country worth a damn was in the shitter from having been through WW2. The U.S. manufacturing sector was untouched. Those are pretty well undeniable facts. Once those other countries finished rebuilding and we actually had competition again, all the economic rules started coming back into play.
Competition? Exactly what did the European countries bring to the finished goods table after rebuilding? America is competing with the monster of cheap foreign labor and lax environmental regulation we created in places like China where our economic policies incentivized US companies to move manufacturing. I don't think Ikea is what did Motor City in.

Less than the Japanese did (Look up the Japanese economic miracle. We helped them so they wouldn't go commie.), except for West Germany of course, which fared rather well. Both benefited heavily from the cold war which happened after WW2.

The industries that sustained them left. That's the reason.

Whatever made them leave?

Cheaper factories, cheaper materials, better locations, lots of things.
