Oh man I just recently transitioned to Threema from Wire. Now have to look after another alternative. Eventually nothing will be truly encrypted.

From a technical standpoint, how could they stop this? Couldn't people still send encrypted messages using outdated versions of encrypted messaging apps?

Decrypting chats would sure provide a lot of information. It takes a long time to go through thousands and thousands of chats. Probably they would search text with suspicious keywords like "kill", "anti-Germany", "adolf" and "rammstein."
