The League of Nations competition, 1927: Contemporary architecture comes to the front

“Our world, like a charnel-house, lies strewn with the detritus of dead epochs.” ⎯ Le Corbusier, Urbanisme (1925)

http://www.fondationlecorbusier.fr/corbuweb/morpheus.aspx?sysId=20&IrisObjectId=4545&sysLanguage=en-en&itemPos=1&sysParentId=20&clearQuery=1

Le Corbusier’s architectural work covers four continents and eleven countries. It is the Foundation’s duty to ensure respect for moral rights over the work; it must contribute to its preservation.... the Foundation joined with the Ministry for Culture and Communication in applying for inscription of Le Corbusier’s architectural and urban work on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Six countries have joined forces in this undertaking: Germany, Argentina, Belgium, Japan, Switzerland and France.

The file was submitted by France to the Unesco World Heritage Centre in January 2008. Twenty-two major works by Le Corbusier are involved. These include: in France, Maisons La Roche and Jeanneret, Villa Savoye, Cité Frugès in Pessac, the Chapelle Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp, the Firminy site, the Immeuble locatif at Porte Molitor; in Germany, the Weissenhof houses in Stuttgart; in Belgium, Maison Guiette in Antwerp; in Switzerland, Maison Jeanneret-Perre at La Chaux-de-Fonds and Immeuble Clarté in Geneva and, in Argentina, the Dr. Currutchet House in La Plata.

Maison Guiette https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maison_Guiette

Maison Guiette also known as Les Peupliers, is a house in Antwerp, Belgium, designed by Le Corbusier in 1926 and built in 1927.[1] It was the studio and living quarters of René Guiette, a painter and art critic.[2] One of the Franco-Swiss architect's lesser-known works, it is an early example of the International Style. In July 2016, the house and several other works by Le Corbusier were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

René Guitte was the son of the luminist painter Jules Guiette and brother of philologist and poet Robert Guiette. He was a war volunteer and active in the Belgian resistance and then studied oriental philology. From 1919 onwards he began to paint. His style shifted from expressionism to cubism and post-cubism. The authenticity of his artistic and intellectual quest made him one of the most interesting figures in the Belgian art landscape of the 20th century. He does not enjoy the reputation of his colleague and friend René Magritte, but they regularly exhibited together and Guiette enjoyed a reputation as one of the best abstract artists in Belgium. Guiette’s work sometimes leans on the art brut, sometimes with a more meditative style.

The Chicago Institute of Art currently has a fascinating René Magritte exhibit that has taught me, among other things, that Magritte was drawn to the work of Edgar Allan Poe....I remember literary theorist Gerald Graff making a very prescient critique of the avant garde and deconstruction in the 1970’s. Rather than challenging bourgeois capitalism, as the movements claimed they were doing, Graff said that they were ultimately serving capitalism’s ends by removing any checks to people buying things. The sexual revolution, for instance, would ultimately just open the way for Madison Avenue to use sex more blatantly. Magritte may have realized this.

Abstract Modernism (Belgium) https://abstractmodernisme.vlaamsekunstcollectie.be/en/node?page=3

Jozef Peeters is one of the pioneers of Abstract Art in Belgium. Just as with Piet Mondriaan (1872 - 1944), Peeters evolves from Post-Impressionism to a symbolism that is heavily influenced by Theosophy. Gradually, his city images take on a strong, abstract character. The ‘animation of the surface’ was then the illustrative principle of Jozef Peeters’ Pure Plasticism, the Belgian variant of the Netherlandish Neo Plasticism. Peeters was also active as a promoter and organiser. Primarily his ideas and theories on Community art were influential. Abstraction was for Peeters not only a new language of images, but also a new ethical stance that must serve the community.

Between 1957 and his death in 1960, he briefly takes up the thread again when he is rediscovered by Jo Delahaut and the group G58. Along with René Guiette (1893 - 1976), Peeters is an honorary member of the young Neo-avant-garde group.

In May 1993 Jopling opened the original White Cube on the first floor of 44 Duke Street, St James, in West End. Since then White Cube has presented solo shows of such British artists as Darren Almond, Jake & Dinos Chapman, Tracey Emin, Lucian Freud, Gilbert & George, Antony Gormley, Mona Hatoum, Damien Hirst, Gary Hume, Runa Islam, Harland Miller, Marc Quinn, Sam Taylor-Wood, Gavin Turk, and Cerith Wyn Evans.

From the link on the Fourth Sex (the Chapman brothers' coauthored book found in the Michael Jackson paraphernalia) -

"On the fourth page of the report — the first page of the leaked document, which is missing the report’s first three pages — the Sheriff’s Department says it found a copy of The Fourth Sex: Adolescent Extremes among Jackson’s possessions. The book includes work by the artists Jake and Dino Chapman, Vanessa Beecroft, Raymond Pettibon, Mike Kelley, Elizabeth Peyton, Karen Kilimnik, Charles Ray, Takashi Murakami, Larry Clark, Rineke Dijkstra, Paul McCarthy, Richard Prince, Gilbert & George, Gavin Turk, and Richard Billingham. According to the report, the art and pornographic material found on Jackson’s property displayed a mix of sexual orientations and types."

What is Delen Private Bank’s story at this year’s Biennale? "We are staging an exhibition on Léon Stynen, on the occasion of #Stynen18. Perhaps the name Léon Stynen is not immediately familiar, but I'm sure everyone knows at least one of his works. The BP building and deSingel in Antwerp, or the casinos in Ostend and Knokke. All of them are prime examples of modernism in Belgium.

"First of all, his BP building is our temporary home during the renovation of our head office on the Jan Van Rijswijklaan in Antwerp. Not only was Léon Stynen an architect and designer, he was also the founder of architecture education in Antwerp and an important promoter of modern architecture.

Carter-Ruck and Schillings Carter-Ruck are not dissimilar to Schillings

In fact, at least three lawyers at Carter-Ruck have come from Schillings, Hanna Basha, Felicity Robinson and Michelle Riondel.

Schillings have attempted to effect a gag order on various websites on the internet to prevent the public from knowing that that there is a clear (electronic) connection between Ark Academies and the Dutroux scandal (about the sexual abuse, torture and murder of children scandal in Belgium in the late 1990's).

Ark Academies sponsor schools in the UK.
