Theosophy and the Architecture of the New World Order (pizzagateart)

So, I've noticed for quite a while now that many famous buildings of the elite were constructed at the turn of the twentieth century when a collection of famous architects were involved with the Theosophical Society. This also applies to artists, sculptors, doctors and scientists. And on looking through the biographies of these famous people this is a factor that is often left out. This is an introductory post to the (very vast) topic which combines the arts, science and esoterica.

This is one of the few essays I have found on the subject of architecture. Theosophy and Architecture (part 1) and Theosophy and Architecture (part 2)

The building of the Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij (Dutch Trade Company) (1919-1926) is a long-time favourite of mine. When I started my PhD research on Theosophy and Art in the Netherlands in 1987, I came across this building in the literature on Karel de Bazel (1869-1923, a Theosophical architect and designer whose most famous work is the subject of this article). I was struck by the peculiarity of it, not only by itself but also with the vision and total work of the architect. It is curiously un-Western in appearance, a pleasure to the eye because of its fine sculpturing, but monolithic in appearance and emphatically turned inward. I was sure from the start that there was more to this building than the literature suggested.

It should be stated here that my explanation of the possible Theosophical symbolism of the building is based partly on existing literature, partly on circumstantial evidence and partly on hypothesis, as the actual research on the building is yet to take place. My hypothesis is based on my long-time experience as a researcher into the way a Theosophical artist views life on earth and expresses this through art. This way of thinking does not create a direct line from A to B. As we shall see it will have turns and hooks but that does not mean it is less coherent than a traditional Western, non-esoteric architectural theory.

The remarkable ‘De Bazel-style’ can still be seen in his first design of the Dutch Trading Company of 1917-18 (fig. 1). This design, however, was rejected by the Board of Directors. It is said that they wanted more floors for future expansion. But the second design of 1919, which incorporates the necessary extra floors, does not differ in this practical aspect alone. It also differs aesthetically. In the first design the façade was flat, severe, serene and classical; superficially it resembled the seventeenth century palace on Dam Square by Jacob van Campen. Its seventeenth-century outlook would have fitted nicely into the atmosphere of the buildings along the canals in the immediate surroundings. The second design is the opposite of the first in many respects: it is capricious, obtrusive and basically Eastern. It is a combination of Assyrian architecture and a Hindu temple.

Completely in line with modern Theosophy, Lauweriks’ design is a combination of Eastern and Western design principles (fig. 2). The justification of the design is closely modelled on Sanskrit texts: it has forty slokas (stanzas in Sanskrit holy books). Lauweriks used mostly Sanskrit sources – he knew Sanskrit fluently – to justify his choice for the leading design principle, which is Kundalini-shakti, which is the cosmic power inherent to all matter.

In human beings, kundalini is symbolically expressed as a snake that rests in the hollow of the tailbone of the spine and that can be activated by chanting certain slokas during yoga meditation. It then unfolds and travels up the spine, activating chakras along the way, thus producing different stages of cosmic energy and consciousness. It is also represented by the caduceus, a rod with wings, on either side of which two snakes entwine upwards. Westerners know the caduceus mainly as a medical symbol.

...In Eastern -- and especially in the Hindu and Buddhist -- architecture the line as a structural, form-giving element is of extreme importance. A world-famous example, which was cherished by Dutch Theosophists because it stood on colonial lands in the Dutch East-Indies, is the Buddhist temple Borobudur in Java. Both the ground plan and the elevation of the temple are determined by the meandering line, which has its parallel in meditation diagrams.

In part 2, the author breaks down the architectural interpretation of Theosophical concepts of chaos, fine matter and the immaterial (glass and light) :

Finally I want to examine the glass roof above the two central courts, the main halls on the ground floor. As De Bazel designed it, through the glass roof daylight was to reach the ground floor unhindered. Apart from the fact that this construction served functionally as a light source within the building, the glass roof must also have had a specific meaning, if we look at it from De Bazel’s own frame of mind. At the time of completion of the building – hence before the floors were removed during renovation in the 1970’s and thus lost forever – light struck directly upon the meandering floor, activating the intersecting and superimposed lines with energy in form and colour and, so to speak, ‘bringing them to life’.

This remarkable element, taken from religious architecture, cannot but symbolize how Light – astral light, in the cosmic sense – brings life to matter. Theosophists believe that astral light shoots itself downwards into inert matter and thus imbues it with the spark of life. Astral light thus charges matter with energy and forces it to develop. The roof therefore symbolizes the highest plane of evolution, Spirit.

The design of Unity Temple represents a leap forward in design for Wright. In recounting his experiences with Unity Temple, he stated that this design was the first time he ever realized that the real heart of a building is its space, not its walls. Indeed, architectural historians have commented on Wright's genius in creating and manipulating space in his designs; in his book The Master Builders, Peter Blake entitled the section on Wright "The Mastery of Space."

World Goodwill – founded in 1932, has been recognized by the United Nations as a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO), and is represented during regular briefing sessions for NGOs at the United Nations. The Lucis Trust has consultative status at the roster level with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. The dropping of the atomic bomb is seen by freemasonic initiates as the spiritual manifestation of Luciferian light. The UN is seen as the harbinger and enforcer of a monopoly over all countries so that global governance and One World principles can supersede national sovereignty. It is a Federalist dream. Consequently, World Goodwill works directly with the “world federalists,” and follows closely the explication as found in Bailey’s The Externalisation of the Hierarchy that gives the work of the UN and its agencies to externalize a so-called Hierarchy of “Illumined Minds,” bringing forth an “Age of Maitreya,” an esoteric label for the return of Christ.

In 1968, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) spearheaded a lobbying effort – along with the United Nations Economic and Social Council headed by Robert Muller – to adopt Resolution 1296 which grants “consultative” status to certain NGOs. In 1970, the Lucis Trust was one of the first to be granted such as status on the UN roster. Muller, a former Assistant Secretary General to the U.N., had good reason to set about his task in further integrating the Lucis Trust with the United Nations. As a devoted disciple of Alice Bailey, he took inspiration from her book A Treatise on White Magic, and “Education in the New Age” in order to create his vision of education for the world. This eventually formed the basis for the Robert Muller schools.

The World Core Curriculum Manual says: “The underlying philosophy upon which the Robert Muller School is based will be found in the teachings set forth in the books of Alice A. Bailey, by the Tibetan teacher, Djwhal Khul.” And this “enlightened” individual wants a New World Order ethos which displaces diversity and the “one in manyness” in favour ONE THOUGHT expressed through regulated building blocks of servitude dressed up as spiritual holism. This is global, One World philosophy which lends itself to something diammetrically opposite to “holding hands across the ocean.” This is a curricula for homogenity of the kind where bland conformity is the new normal. (For Muller’s work in environmentalism along aide Maurice Strong see: Dark Green VII: The Club of Rome and “World Problematique”)

Muller’s ideas simply mirror the Alice Bailey teachings where “World Citizenship” and a “World Federation” will begin to manifest as a result of the activation of a “World Brain” developed by so-called “enlightened” individuals or “World Servers.” [10] And who would preside over this “enlightened” Synarchy? Once again, the constant harping on global consciousness as the only way to be harmonious means subservience to a centralised global order where the individual is secondary to the Group Mind. Education is a means to introduce uniformed thinking where diversity and creativity exist insofar that it conforms to the One World philosophy. This description could be straight out of a Marxist or Fabian treatises tied up with a rainbow ribbon of New Age floss. (Keep in mind the agency of UNESCO which served to introduce the same agenda from a humanist perspective. (It is also interesting in terms of Common Purpose in the UK and Common Core education initiatives causing so many problems in the U.S. (We will explore all these ties in the next and future posts.)

Unusually for a woman, Annie Besant founded the British Federation of the International Order of Co-Freemasonry and was heavily involved with Fabian socialism co-founding the Fabian Society. This potent occult mix drew together Gnostic Christians and Spiritualists, including Frank Podmore, later Lord and Lady Passfield, the Freemason William Clarke, Viscount and Viscountess Snowden, British Prime Minister J. Ramsay Macdonald, Lord Sidney Oliver, Lord Thomson and Soviet agent Lord Haldane, and others. In the same year, Scottish noble Douglas Dunglas Home, who had sponsored Blavatsky as early as 1858 and given séances for the Czar, returned to Great Britain, where, with support of the Cecil family, he founded the Society for Psychical Research, whose members included Arthur Conan Doyle, Lord Balfour, John Dewey, William James and Lord Bertrand Russell.

Le Corbusier’s architectural work covers four continents and eleven countries. It is the Foundation’s duty to ensure respect for moral rights over the work; it must contribute to its preservation.... the Foundation joined with the Ministry for Culture and Communication in applying for inscription of Le Corbusier’s architectural and urban work on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Six countries have joined forces in this undertaking: Germany, Argentina, Belgium, Japan, Switzerland and France.

René Guitte was the son of the luminist painter Jules Guiette and brother of philologist and poet Robert Guiette. He was a war volunteer and active in the Belgian resistance and then studied oriental philology. From 1919 onwards he began to paint. His style shifted from expressionism to cubism and post-cubism. The authenticity of his artistic and intellectual quest made him one of the most interesting figures in the Belgian art landscape of the 20th century. The Chicago Institute of Art currently has a fascinating René Magritte exhibit that has taught me, among other things, that Magritte was drawn to the work of Edgar Allan Poe....I remember literary theorist Gerald Graff making a very prescient critique of the avant garde and deconstruction in the 1970’s. Rather than challenging bourgeois capitalism, as the movements claimed they were doing, Graff said that they were ultimately serving capitalism’s ends by removing any checks to people buying things. The sexual revolution, for instance, would ultimately just open the way for Madison Avenue to use sex more blatantly. Magritte may have realized this.

Jozef Peeters is one of the pioneers of Abstract Art in Belgium. Just as with Piet Mondriaan (1872 - 1944), Peeters evolves from Post-Impressionism to a symbolism that is heavily influenced by Theosophy. Gradually, his city images take on a strong, abstract character. The ‘animation of the surface’ was then the illustrative principle of Jozef Peeters’ Pure Plasticism, the Belgian variant of the Netherlandish Neo Plasticism. Peeters was also active as a promoter and organiser. Primarily his ideas and theories on Community art were influential. Abstraction was for Peeters not only a new language of images, but also a new ethical stance that must serve the community.

Between 1957 and his death in 1960, he briefly takes up the thread again when he is rediscovered by Jo Delahaut and the group G58. Along with René Guiette (1893 - 1976), Peeters is an honorary member of the young Neo-avant-garde group.

The Branche Persévérance is a vanished Antwerp branch of the Belgian Theosophical Society . This branch was founded in 1910 and disappeared in 1963 at the death of its driving force Mr. Frans Wittemans .

He became known as the Rosicrucian , theosophist , martinist and Freemason . He was also vice-chairman of the consistory of the Antwerp Protestant Church . He can be regarded as an important link between the esoteric movements of the 19th century and those of the 20th century. Wittemans had still known the French occultist Papus . At the request of Dr Annie Besant , he founded the Universal League for the Universal Peace in 1913 . He regretted that this league was unable to prevent the First World War. Wittemans was also a personal friend of Jiddu Krishnamurti and guided them on lecture tours. He was the initiator of the Spiritual World Congress in 1946. He was also one of the architects of the FUDOSI , where he stayed in the background, but inter alia mediated that Harvey Spencer Lewis and his AMORC movement were recognized. Wittemans also introduced Alice Bailey in Belgium and organized a series of lectures for her.
