During World War II, Water Island served as an Army base to protect a submarine base on St. Thomas. Then the Army's Chemical Warfare Division used the island as a laboratory for poisonous gas and chemical agents. In 1951, a former investment banker named Walter Philips stumbled upon Water Island while searching for a place to retire. By that point, the Army had turned the land over to the Department of Interior. Philips and his wife, Floride, leased Water Island and started developing it, opening a hotel in the abandoned Army barracks, building Honeymoon Beach, which later made a cameo in the Oscar-winning The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and turning a once-deserted island into a thriving community known for its no-frills beauty and eclectic inhabitants. There has never been a whole lot to do on Water Island other than unplug. Today, residents are a mix of old-timers who've lived there for decades and young people raising children while commuting to jobs on nearby islands.

The retired teacher for South Lyon Community Schools substitute teaches in St. Croix at Country Day School and also at St. Mary’s Catholic School, established in 1898, where on Friday he was instructing first graders.

Wallace said that he hopes to see Biden at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Christiansted on Sunday, where he will ask him to come read to the students at St. Mary's.

Would Wallace vote for Biden if he ran for president?

He hesitates before carefully answering, "I think Biden deserves his opportunity to run as president. I’m not partial to that party, so it doesn’t matter to me, but he is a nice guy in person. He's a gentleman's gentleman."

He adds, "He was very nice and gave me the time of day."

And what was Biden's vote for spaghetti sauce?

Prego Traditional.
