An undercover probe has discovered child labour at farms linked to coffee giant Nespresso. Dispatches filmed children working eight-hour days for less than £5 up to six days a week carrying out heavy manual labour. George Clooney, who famously advertises the coffee brand, has said he is ‘saddened’ by the findings of the Channel 4 documentary, to be screened next week. The actor – who has reportedly earned £31million as the brand’s ambassador – has promised that ‘work will be done’ after footage showed youngsters picking beans and moving heavy loads at coffee plantations in Guatemala.
‘We work with Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade International to reinforce good working practices and fair treatment of workers, including education on the risks of child labour. ‘In fact, all of the farms in the cooperatives in this region of Guatemala are Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade certified. ‘We invest heavily in this effort; in 2019, our 400 agronomists made over 170,000 farm visits and trainings across the world, including 60,000 detailed on farm sustainability assessments. ‘This was backed up by more than 3,300 third party verification farm audits.
Guatemalan House of Culture - I 'member - better than any movie. I think you hit the nail on the head with "fair trade" which is like "climate crisis". It's a business and a way to skim and launder money. Remember Di Caprio was tied to the Amazon fires.
Imagine that - Looney Clooney and his human trafficking enabler wife, Anal. We all remember the pic of Clooney looking like he's zipping up, sitting next to 0, with a 7 yo Chinese child kneeling between them...
Multi-national corporations generally don't spend $35M on a brand "ambassador" without doing a little due diligence. I'm sure they knew, at a minimum.
I'd like to take a blowtorch to the web author:
"Drag Queen Story Hour is more than just drag queens reading to children. It serves to provide spaces where children can see people who defy rigid gender roles, express their own gender identity, and find glamorously positive queer role models. It is also a place where parents can learn about gender expression and have the chance to meet people who can share their experiences on growing up gender non-conforming. Please join us for a family event that will include stories that promote service-learning, diversity, education, and creativity."
