The tunnel was only 8 inches in diameter but was 22 feet deep and nearly 600 feet long,

Looking forward to the Wired article to see how this worked

How could this have worked? How do you bore a 8 inch wide tunnel for 600 feet? How would the transport work? You put the drugs in very skinny bag and attach 600 feet of cable to either end? Tiny remote controlled car?

B\c the cartels hired some serious engineers from somewhere. At one point even NASA was impressed with the engineering capabilities of the SMEs who freelance for the cartels...(includes comms engineers to setting up repeater systems\short wave). Sure...safe to say tunnels are used for trafficking drugs, humans, weapons...ect. Didn't El Chappo escape via a tunnel: https://www.businessinsider.com/el-chapo-guzman-jail-escape-two-tunnels-2016-12

Good chance that the guys on both side are already on the radar, and need to flee to China.

It was a big enough tunnel to walk through it was just an 8 inch hole under the kfc for the drugs to be passed through and then the smuggler would just walk back to Mexico

Bigger than the air chute that is used by banks to snatch your paycheck at the drive through. Reminds me of the Wendys' I was poisoned at in Manatee county about twenty years ago. It was during the crack epidemic, and some entrepreneur started selling weed, coke, crack, heroin, you name it right on US 41. The code worde were extra parsly, fine salt and sheeite. It was the food poisoning by the illegal immigrant Haitian workers that even got the place noticed by the police. That one ran for a long time without a tunnel to Mexico.

This is far fetched but maybe they dug from below. The dimensions make it seem like they just somehow cut small enough to not cave in. Maybe part of a larger tunnel system at least.
