The coordinates were sent as a PM to some reddit account. I'm wondering if somehow this was an attempt to identify that redditor?

what a backfire, if that was the goal

might not be tho

It'd almost certainly be a branch of the US government attempting the identification. It would assume:

(1) Either the redditor always uses a VPN to access reddit, or reddit isn't giving out the user's logs (unlikely).

(2) The redditor going to google maps to look up the geocoordinates without using a vpn, or with google maps having some methods for unmasking vpn (likely). I don't know how many other services are up on the net to look up geocoordinates, but google maps is the most likely service to be used.

I guess the main questions are, (1) is this redditor using vpn, and (2) was there some reason for the government to want to identify him?

Probably someone who is working individually or in a private group that isn't using an open discussion board like 4chan to do research about these operations and doesn't want anything leading back to him.

I'm guessing the tech-savy people quickly realised that any research posted would immediately be available to the groups they are trying to incriminate.
