I wonder if this has anything to do with the insanely high prices associated with otherwise plain "works of art". $4 million for a white canvas with a single black stripe or some other such nonsense.

Now that I think about it, I wonder if that's happened at some point. Someone hears a noise from a crate, so the curator opens up a quickly thrown together collection of monochromatic noise exclaiming " Pssh, peasant, don't you even recognize a priceless Merde du Chevalier?"
