What is the link between genital herpes and oral herpes (cold sores on the mouth)?

Oral herpes (such as cold sores or fever blisters on or around the mouth) is usually caused by HSV-1. Most people are infected with HSV-1 during childhood from non-sexual contact. For example, people can get infected from a kiss from a relative or friend with oral herpes. More than half of the population in the U.S. has HSV-1, even if they don’t show any signs or symptoms. HSV-1 can also be spread from the mouth to the genitals through oral sex. This is why some cases of genital herpes are caused by HSV-1.

It's weird to me that children mysteriously get herpes sores on their mouth.

Isn't hand mouth and foot desease a herpe?

Hand foot and mouth presents differently than herpes. I believe hf&m is enterovirus (sp) and not herpes.

Maybe you are missing my point. I think it's really odd that children just get herpes from nowhere, yet their form of oral herpes can be transmitted to adults in genital presentation.

Well, I mean if we can entertain the notion that a kiss from a family member can give HSM-1 to the child, then we can entertain that the child can now transmit to a new adult, no? Giving that adult, now, the chance to transmit HSM-1 to a partner during oral sex? That's about the best I'd be able to come up with. Keep in mind that I am not a herpes expert.
