In recent decades, Year Zero has been most associated with the Communist Khmer Rouge takeover of Cambodia. After the end of the Vietnam War, Pol Pot and his Communist army emptied the populations of the major cities of Cambodia into rural agricultural communes. Millions died of torture, starvation and summary execution. The Khmer Rouge used young teen true believers as leaders with power over life and death. The Khmer Rouge Communist agricultural commune system and the bureaucracy of torture and executing political dissenters has become known as The Killing Fields (see film by that title).
Year Zero began in Cambodia with the emptying of the cities. As implemented, the evacuation of the cities was like a nationwide Bataan Death March. Known for brutally enforcing conformity, the Khmer Rouge shot people for crazy reasons like they wore glasses, or whatever.
