The knowledge these emails had been leaked came long before fake news was a topic. Long before 99% of people had ever heard of fake news. My opinion is that fake news was one of the pieces of amunition the democratic party considered part of their arsenal if things did escalate. And as for the graph, fake news was higher at first because the second a thing was said about the emails, that piece of amunition was brought out in full force.
