Seven days ago the Grand Master of the 13,000-strong Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, Fra Matthew Festing offered his resignation to Pope Francis.

So the Knights of Malta are suddenly without a leader.

Moreover, in a further startling development, the Vatican has announced that Pope Francis will soon announce his personal choice to be his “delegate” to temporarily run the more than 900-year-old military order. of Malta.

This is unprecedented. The order has always elected its own Grand Master. Never has a Pope acted in this way before toward the order. And this has raised eyebrows worldwide.

Is there more to the story ??? There usually is with these types. I thought the timing interesting. So, looking for the real sex scandal, Haiti pops up.....

The Haiti Child Sex Abuse Scandal

In September 2007, the Knights of Malta (KOM) gave an award to Douglas Perlitz for his ten years of charitable work with Haitian orphan children. The Knights’ publications praised Perlitz repeatedly – in 2005 and in 2008, as well as in 2007.

Perlitz, a Fairfield University graduate who had been a commencement speaker for the school in 2002, set up a child care project in Haiti: Project Pierre Toussaint (PPT). He had active support – including over $2 million in donations to his Haiti Fund – from the Knights of Malta (KOM), affluent alumni and benefactors of Fairfield University, the Oblates of Mary Immaculate (a Canadian order), and other prominent Catholics from the Diocese of Bridgeport. (One of the board members for this Haiti Fund was Philip Allen Lacovara, the attorney who represented the Bridgeport diocese in the failed attempt to block release of documents relating to clergy sexual abuse cases, and his wife, Madeline. She is a member of the Dames of Malta, and Lacovara is legal counsel for the Knights of Malta.)

Now, Perlitz has been convicted of sex abuse crimes in Haiti by a US court. For his violation of 'sex tourism' laws, Perlitz has received a 19-year Federal prison sentence.

From 1998-2008 while operating PPT in Cap Hatien, Perlitz regularly abused boys. They were forced to comply, knowing that if they did not, they would lose access to food, clean water, clothes, etc.

Douglas Perlitz's "charity” was organized and chaired by Fr. Paul Carrier, S.J., long time Campus Minister of Fairfield University, Magistral Chaplain in the Knights of Malta (12,13) – and a close mentor and friend of Perlitz. Funding and support for the PPT were actively solicited from persons associated with Fairfield University (whose alumni/benefactor list (14, 15) contains heavy hitters in the world of Opus Dei's Mammon), and from the KOM - both corporately and in individual contributions from its Knights and Dames........

Sex abuse allegations arise against former Fairfield U chaplain

Besides Fairfield University, claims were also filed against Hope E. Carter, a national leader of the Order of Malta, Haiti Fund, Inc. and Society of Jesus of New England as defendants, on charges of negligent supervision.

Sexual abuse still persists fifteen years after Spotlight, attorney and source argues

Fifteen years after the Boston Globe’s Spotlight series uncovered the widespread sexual abuse of Catholic priest — and more than a year after it became a highly acclaimed film on the big screen — the issue of priest molesting children still exists throughout Massachusetts and worldwide.

Pope Francis is making compassionate statements but it’s not being followed with compassionate activity,” Garabedian, who helped the Globe expose the Catholic church in its 2002 Spotlight reports, told the audience. “Transparency is necessary. The records have to be released for this to begin to end.”

Garabedian said he is handling 49 cases in Connecticut’s federal court alone against Douglas Perlitz, a Jesuit priest at Fairfield University who is accused of sexually abusing children at a school in Haiti. He’s also received calls across the country about abuse from other priests. “Documents around the country have been produced through litigation indicating that supervisors of pedophile priests knew what was going on and did nothing about it and hid it,” Garabedian said. “It’s time for transparency so the victims can try to heal and gain a degree of closure.”
