Operating from the entire top floor of an office block overlooking Hyde Park, Cherie Blair is quietly building an empire to rival her husband’s. For Mrs Blair, who turns 60 later this year, has rapidly expanded her business and charitable interests. From her anonymous headquarters, she runs her own international law firm as well as a women’s charity that only last week pocketed a £1 million grant from the world’s largest consulting firm.

Her law firm, Omnia Strategy, of which she is chairman, has opened an office in Washington DC but it also works on cases as far afield as Nigeria, Ghana, Gabon and Cameroon in west Africa. Unlike most law firms, Omnia does not advertise its telephone number nor its address. It is registered officially in Baker Street, in central London, in a gleaming office building, although no one at the building’s reception desk was aware of the law firm’s existence. In fact, the firm’s accountants are based there and Omnia is actually located on the top floor of another building, near Hyde Park. There is no mention of the legal practice on the name plate, either inside or outside. The firm said its whereabouts were kept secret for “security reasons”. Its success mirrors that of Mr Blair’s. Omnia Strategy describes itself on its website as a “pioneering international law firm”, able to “tackle complex problems that require an innovative and multi-disciplinary approach”. Last year, it applied and received from the Solicitors Regulation Authority approval to operate as an “alternative business structure”, allowing Omnia, according to the Law Society, to “provide a wider range of services to clients” than a traditional law firm.

Washington based Podesta Group was hired by the Maldives government to “whitewash their crimes,” the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has said.

“Government officials are clearly rattled at the prospect of facing targeted sanctions. But rather than doing the right thing and freeing the political prisoners, they are spending obscene amounts of public money on foreign lobbyists, who will try to whitewash their crimes,” said Hamid Abdul Ghafoor, the party’s international spokesman.

A contract published on the US Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) office’s website states that the Podesta Group has been employed for a monthly sum of US$50,000 to “provide strategic counsel on strengthening” the Maldives’ ties to the US government.

Ahmed Sareer, the permanent representative of the Maldives to the UN, signed the agreement on behalf of the Maldives. The contract runs from September 8, 2015 through March 7, 2016.

Jailed former President Mohamed Nasheed’s lawyers have threatened to lobby for targeted sanctions if he is not freed after a UN ruling on his imprisonment.

The government had employed London-based Omnia Strategy to respond to the UN. The PR and legal firm is chaired by Cherie Blair, the wife of former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The Attorney General’s Office initially denied reports of hiring Podesta. When the agreement was made public, the office said the foreign ministry had handled the contract.
