Mac users can encrypt their entire drive (HD) with FileVault.
Go to System Preferences -> Security & Privacy -> FileVault.
It generates a backup key in case you forget your account password (you must sign in to access) and you can also send it to apple (I personally would not do that but it's an option).

Only unlock-enabled users can start or unlock the drive. Once unlocked, other users may also use the computer until it is shut down.
FYI/DISCLAIMER: If you forget your password AND your key, then ALL OF YOUR DATA IS LOST!
