Selective editing of footage, without notice, ought to be legally considered libel. If a newspaper article chopped up quotes to the extent that CNN chops up footage, they would be sued into bankruptcy. All true, but as a historical note, there was a time before network news was so deeply political. The 6:00 news was seen as something between a loss leader and a public service, not a money maker, and journalists had a lot more integrity in that role. All true, but as a historical note, there was a time before network news was so deeply political. The 6:00 news was seen as something between a loss leader and a public service, not a money maker, and journalists had a lot more integrity in that role. Reputation was everything, not shock jock celebrity status. Once the media companies realized they could actually make money out of sensationalized news, everything went down the drain.
Of course there was and always have been sources where you could find yellow journalism, I'm just saying there was a time when you could find something that wasn't yellow. Now we can't even agree on the most basic facts of the world, much less what should be done about it.
