I tell people all the time that iphone killed the internet. Something like "before iphone, what kinds of people were online? Who actually owned a computer and went online?"
The rise of the smartphone definitely ushered in a new era in computing, though. We should come up with a name for it. I propose: the iZombie Apocalypse.
Gone is the golden age of online communication: Where the only people who had one used it strictly for school or work in an era where school and work were competitive and demanded people of merit instead of diversity quotas.
As such, the majority of people were white and respectful with one another.
Now every jackass is on it and whatever you say can get your life ruined by complete strangers

That said...the most "cozy" the net has ever been for me. RPG scene in the late 90's early 2000's. People really tried to be good to one another. I've never seen anything like it before or since.
I don't remember the "respectful" internet but I do remember when you could call people niggers and faggots and no one gave a shit because everyone did it and if anyone got seriously mad about anything online, everyone would unite to relentlessly mock them for taking internet so seriously.

Infact I'm not convinced, if you took all the smart phones away, most of those people wouldn't revert back to being internetless, because that would proactively require going to the other room to actively communicate / look up news instead of just whatever is in front of your face atm.
