ok guys im letting you in on a secret project
i know i just made a post about the kalashnikov
but at the same time i was posting that
u/doesntgetsarcasm made a post about a smoking deal on 80 percent ar lowers
its already sold out but not before i snagged one
so now i have been given the terrible homework of selecting all the components i want for it lol
i figure ill make a series of posts here thinking through my decisions
heres where im at to start
i want this to be a pretty standard ar in 5.56 x 45
nothing too crazy
keep it on the light side because ars are good at that if you let them
im also going with a 14.5 inch barrel with pinned and welded muzzle device
i have at least four rifles thatve been made way longer after adding the muzzle device
its kind of annoying
so im going to minimize length to get the opposite experience
so far im thinking bcm upper with mlok rail
basic magpul furniture
the only real tricky thing is for the fire control im thinking is the slt 1 by ke arms
i really like how its a well sealed single unit
the ar in general is very well sealed against debris ingress
so im going to maximize on that
the in range guys used it for their what would stoner do project
im taking some ideas from that but not going to the same extreme for weight savings
ill eschew iron sights completely
but im planning on a hammer forged barrel instead of the lightest barrel possible
i think thats all for now
i havent even received the chunk of metal yet lol
but thats where im at for now
so well see
robot7247 ago
Do you have the routing fixture yet? Search around, prices vary wildly. IIRC ghostguns.com at one point had some of the lowest $$$ ones.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
a friend of mine built one so im going to see if he still has it
robot7247 ago
Will be interested in your progress.
Never bought any 80% lowers, up to the point that the '94 AWB was imminent, 100% lowers were cheap...
clamhurt_legbeard ago
ive owned zero ars
but i found this for like 25 bucks
well see how cheap this cheap lower ends up
first guess
1500 bucks lol
Artooweaboo ago
Consider a lpvo 1-6 or 1-4 with rds on 45 mount like they do for 3 gun. Between the two you have near zero failure probability.
I’d go .300 BO/7.62x39/.458 socom in pistol or longer range in 6.5 Grendel. But only if you reload.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
i agree with your ideas for fatter rounds out of a pistol
i already have an ak in 7.62 tho so ive been planning on 5.56 for this
i forgot about 6.5 grendel
so many 6mm these days
ill have to remind myself what its all about
Artooweaboo ago
If you already have AK, don't bother with .223 out of a AR pattern. I'd chamber it in .223 Wylde if you have to, but, I'd argue 7.62 is an arguably better and cheaper round. You could also more effectively suppress it and run sub-sonics in it and still have some power. I guess you could run .223 if you were varmint hunting or something.
I'd start here for grendel. Some people know what they're talking about, it'll take some time to sort out.
http://www.65grendel.com/forum/
I have been reloading it for almost a year now. It is 'harder' to get universal loads for it, unlike .308. I can discuss why, if you're interested. I'd think about spending the money up front on a barrel from someone with a reputation for shooting commercial ammo well. I cheaped out on the barrel and got a bear creek, because I knew I'd be reloading anyway. But it is possible I could have saved money by having to do less load development if I had gotten a 'better' barrel. I have learned a lot. But you never know until you get the barrel. ~1/2 MOA isn't shabby out of an autoloader.
I'd be more than happy to help out if you have any reloading or AR-pattern questions, if I know the answers.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
why not do 5.56
i have two aks
one 5.45 and one 7.62x39
as a general concept i tend to go with the rule of ammo i can find without issue in somalia
tho i do have access to good reloading equipment
ive heard the name 223 wylde
sootch00 said it was the best of both worlds between 223 and 556 but i dont know more than that
Artooweaboo ago
Well it doesn’t do anything that 7.62 doesn’t do as well. You only need enough ammo to get their weapon. I like to think functionality.
6.5 gives you 1000 yard capability.
Wylde lets you shoot 5.56 and .223
clamhurt_legbeard ago
5.56 is flatter shooting than 7.62x39
5.45 is much more redundant
but how big does it matter to have a 223 wylde chamber for 556 and 223
how much of a difference is it compared to 223 out of 556
Artooweaboo ago
Agreed, on both counts, but flatter isn't better. There is a trade off. Different calibers for different applications.
.223 wylde was designed to shoot both, the accuracy of .223 Rem with the higher pressure of the 5.56.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
why is more pressure better
is it because flatter is better lol
seriously tho i think flatter is always better
its just a question of whether or not the total package is worth it when including recoil
terminal effects
etc
doesntgetsarcasm ago
Thanks for the mention.
How are you planning to machine your lower? I used 5d tacticals jig for mine.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
i have a friend who built one
i believe he had his own jig and still has it
but i havent talked to him yet to confirm
and i dont know what brand it is or any of the pros and cons
how did you like yours
doesntgetsarcasm ago
I've done quite a few. They all turned out ok, The safety is tight in most of them for some reason so I guess I'll file that a little bit and try to get some of them loosened up. I don't even use those guns, I just put them together for spares.
Are you planning to paint yours or anodize it? I've anodized and dyed most of mine, My friend cerakotes his. The last gun him and his brother cerakoted(not an 80%)for a charity auction they did a battle worn look where they painted it pink and then painted it black and just rubbed some of the black off to make it look worn.
Have you ever heard of elctro etching? It's kind of neat to engrave stuff into the lowers and its pretty easy to do.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
i was planning on cerakoting it myself
give the receiver a real durable finish for actual protection
then spray paint everything camo lol
ive done crude electroetching with a cell phone charger and a qtip dipped in salt water
slow but actually works surprisingly well
did selector markings on my bulgarian ak and my dads romanian
im going to need to do that on the blank too
i was going to have them do it
except it cost ten bucks
and im only paying 35 shipped lol
ill figure something out though
i could even just put a dot with paint in it
tth667 ago
Can you fit it with a binary trigger?
clamhurt_legbeard ago
probably but honestly i see no need to
semi auto goes bang bang real good
tth667 ago
Got it. Gonna be a badass build, binary or not. Good luck with it.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
thank you sir
i have no idea how many of these posts i will do
but i figure itll be fun and help me figure out my thoughts through discussion with everybody here
ive already potentially shifted to just getting the lightest barrel instead of hammer forged
with modern processes it is better than it was
and with this build im thinking about going all in to maximize the things the ar is best at
tth667 ago
You're gonna go down in history for merging the genius of kalishnokov with the genius of stoner, the penultimate does-e everything rifle that blends carbine with main battle rifle. Fucking Godspeed clammy, our prayers are with you. History is yours for the making. The preceding may be dramatized, maybe even hyperbolic, I've been drinking, but the essence is pure, and your new rifle is probbla gonna be badass. Proceed.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
on my aks the rear sling swivel is right behind the pistol grip
snug it up to get it out of the way like this
just this morning i found a way to make the sling on an ar do that
im pretty pumped
blumen4alles ago
No iron sights?
That was one of my requirements with my configs (backup iron sights). I also setup a co-witness on my AR. What would you do if your electronic sight or optics failed?
Glad to hear you got a good deal on your lower!
clamhurt_legbeard ago
ya this is what im going to try
thoughts on optics
aimpoint t1
if the optic fails that means the weapon and my body failed long before lol
or maybe i get something passive like tritium or ambient light
i figure this is a good way to save a bit of money without committing to anything
i can put irons on later if it bothers me
this thing is pretty experimental
i already have two aks if i actually needed a carbine for anything life and death
and in the meantime i can experiment with this and do unorthodox things
drakesdoom2 ago
Vortex makes a 1x prisim optic. 1moa dot, two rings around that. Normal battery, but short life. Illuminates red or green, daylight bright to dead of night dim. I don't have night vision but there is a lower setting them what I set at night that might work. Reticle is etched in the glass so even with no power you have a black dot with two rings.
Saves a lot more money then an aimpoint.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
exactly
there are some very cool optics out there nowadays
ill check that one out too
Armpit_and_Ass ago
why are you putting one sentence per line
and also not using any punctuation
who writes like this
are you some kind of illiterate retard
blumen4alles ago
I use that style sometimes
helps me keep my thoughts straight
effective way of getting points across too
Armpit_and_Ass ago
Yeah, no, not really. I made it three sentences in, rolled my eyes, and moved on. This is shit they teach us in first grade. Have some self respect, white man.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
clamvoice uses no punctuation
each sentence needs its own line to avoid runon sentences lol
Armpit_and_Ass ago
So, an illiterate retard. Gotcha.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
literacy is a social construct lol
drakesdoom2 ago
So faxon barrels are not cold hammer forged, but the have muzzle devices no larger then the barrel so you can put your own gas block on.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
truth
the biggest reason im thinking of going with an entire bcm upper is because they are excellent quality with full testing on all their parts
im big on mpi testing etc
i really like cold hammer forging because of the strength it gives to the metal
i want to encourage that industry
tho modern metallurgy may make that unnecessary nowadays
i havent checked too much but my understanding is colt has always been using button rifles barrels
and those are military grade
so who can say
there is definitely something to be said for taking advantage of the ease in assembling an ar
its not hard to put a barrel on myself
drakesdoom2 ago
Cold hammer forging used to be good because it doesn't inside heat stress. Modern barrels can be button rifled then stress relieved. Or just go bull barrel for a solid bayonet mount.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
yeah thats kinda my thought
i dunno man
my other option is lightened and fluted barrel
but honestly i think were talking a max of six ounces
then again the 14.5 barrel is i think only 3oz lighter than 16 and i already thought that was important
ounces make pounds
decisions
drakesdoom2 ago
I went pencil 16 inch so I could play with muzzle devices. They have 5 different cut barrels so there are choices.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
the other thing i need to worry about is the barrel getting hot
inrange did a test on poi change
faxons barrels did well
i can only assume bcm also does well
or buy a faxon
drakesdoom2 ago
I have run mine as hard as the barrel on my cheap rifle and it didn't move when the cheap rifle did.
That doesn't say anything about bcm though.
My understanding is any bull barrel is good. It's light barrels that are tricky.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
true dat
i might just go full light and see what happens
its still gonna be heavier than my 10/22 barrel i imagine
and thats at least as serious a gun as this will be
that is for food
thantik ago
AR "pistol"
clamhurt_legbeard ago
thats definitely an option
but with 5.56 im not sure theres a big advantage
5.56 is pretty velocity dependant for fragmentation last i heard
id be more interested in a pistol for 7.62x39 or 6.8 i think
are there any 5.56 options that fragment to say 100 m out of a 10.5 in barrel
drakesdoom2 ago
I would look into concussion from a 10.5 5.56 barrel first. Even if you can find ammo that will be effective, would you want to use it?
clamhurt_legbeard ago
to follow up on my results here
the answer is even military guys are like holy shit 10.5 is too loud
put a can on it or just go with 14.5
so thats good to know
dashantavious ago
Sweet, looking forward to seeing the build.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
then im gonna paint it lol
dashantavious ago
Just leave it be - it's going to be gorgeous just as it is. And when you decide to give it to ol' Dash remember: I like it raw.
The gun, I mean. When you want to give me the gun.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
lol not a chance
im gonna paint it with fancy shit
then paint over it with trash
lol
dashantavious ago
Nooooooooooooooooooooo! Don't treat my gun the way you treat random ladies at the ATM!
Do a good job building my gun, yo.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
its gonna look fucking awesome when i get through with it
dashantavious ago
I dunno man. Just leave it alone for a while. I'm starting to think you'd paint a Browning hi power.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
i dont paint things with souls
ar has no soul
it is a battle droid
dashantavious ago
Wtf? Give Fart2 a chance! Dude, you love your 22. This is the most badass 22 in the world. It's going to rock you up your... Oh, I'm not I the right sub to talk like that. Anyway, you're going to love it. Nts will be jealous.
drakesdoom2 ago
Tan anti rust primer it is.
clamhurt_legbeard ago
hahaha
fuck yeah
im gonna go way simpler than my 22
two or one color
