Just had my own "Eye opening" experience with Deus Ex. There is a bulletin near the beginning of the game talking about a French group starting a "Meme war". This game was made in 2000 (gaming)

I think the term "meme" came into popular usage in about 2006, especially with internet culture.
Were the French onto something, given this games many references to real life conspiracies and real life happenings? Or is this just writing?

The word meme has been floating around the net since the 90's at least. For example there was the site memepool which shutdown in the late 90's or early 2000's. It was a fun site where users would submit interesting links.

Memepool was a major website in 2000.
