....If you got a gag order....wouldn't it be illegal to post a warrant canary update? I'm actually asking.

That's the point, you look for the canary, if it isn't there you know something is up, since it is done manually each time, it just doesn't get written the last time. it's not so much an update, but a failure to update.

But wouldn't the fact that they have to write one make it untrustworthy? If the FBI was here telling them to post a canary that said nothing was happening.....I doubt they would fight that.

..they don't have to write anything.

If there's been some sort of secret subpoena, which voat couldn't reveal to the public, then the warrant canary will be removed. So, for now, they are saying "We haven't had any blablabla. They haven't asked us for user information" (or w/e). If they do get subpoenaed, they can't say "Ok guys, FBI asked us for shit" because it's secret. So what they do instead is just remove the notice which doesn't technically mean they're disclosing FBI contact, they're just not denying it anymore.

I understand. But it's not like the FBI, CIA, etc are stupid. If they really wanted, they would just tell them to post a canary that says nothing has changed. I just don't understand the point if it's an admin written update. That is EASILY compromised.
